Absolutely incredible event on the sun's surface !
      #6108665 - 09/30/13 04:06 AM

Hi.

I found that the big filament is gone and I was interested to find when and how. So I checked some GONG videos in archive section to find this sequence...

I never seen something that spectacular. I never imagined seeing a shock wave on the sun's surface... Wow, totally crazy. Just imagine the energy of this shock wave. I never imagined being able to see the sun's surface moving like water...

After all the images are loaded, click STOP, enter 350 as starting frame and click START. Watch out...

David.

Me too and how come it disappeared in a so violent way. Its like an explosion. Did you pay attention to the smaller filament vortex caused by the shock wave ? What a powerful energy. Any planet would have been destroyed in second with a such energy.

More I watch it, more I find it incredible... ! So much details captured. Thanks GONG.

Andre.

You beat me to it ...

Just had a play with the SDO data to show the same event , shan't bother with a separate thread now , if it's OK I'll just post a link to the YT video ...

I didn't soil myself, but there may have been a tear or two running down my leg.

It's also cool for me because it's the same filament that I imaged Saturday, my very first DSLR image.

Maybe this will bring on a soiling then ...

The filament eruption was a lot further reaching than I first realised ....

Absolutely amazing. I have only been watching the Sun in Ha for about 3 years and that was one of the longest filaments I have seen. Then POOF!!! It was gone.

It isn't really an explosion. It is a type of filament event known as a "disparition brusque" (sudden vanishing), and occurs when a large filament breaks its anchor points and floats upwards and away from the sun, slowly breaking up in the process. Filaments are "magnetically buoyant", like a child's helium filled balloon. They are held down in the sun's overall diverging magnetic field by localized magnetic "footpoints" near the surface. Once these footpoints change or decay (or the filament grows to a height of at least 50,000 km above the surface), the filament can break loose from the sun and float up and away, usually breaking up and vanishing. This kind of event can also occasionally produce a coronal mass ejection. With this sudden change in local surface magnetic fields that occurred as the filament broke away, small areas of plage can briefly appear on either side of the area near the surface beneath where the filament once was (the former "Filament channel"), which was seen after the filament had broken loose and gotten pretty close to vanishing. Occasionally, another filament will occasionally re-form in a location similar to that of the previously disrupted filament, so the area might be worth watching for another day or two. Clear skies to you.

As solar events go, it was very impressive visually, but the energy released actually wasn't all that high. Indeed, the X-ray emission following the filament's departure barely hit a C-level. Seeing one this big go is maybe slightly rare, but it isn't terribly uncommon. It is nice to get to see the CME from the filament's disappearance go up so high, and it will be interesting to see if the geometry of the CME would make the material from the event encounter Earth's magnetic field in the next couple of days. So far, the SEC hasn't said much about the event's potential impact, although the proton flux is up somewhat. Clear skies to you.

Wow, thank you so much for sharing that. I had seen that large filament the other day and when it wasn't there yesterday, I just figured it had rotated to the other side of the Sun!

Looks like that disparition brusque eruption did manage to get us an Earthward-bound CME. We had a nice Aurora late Tuesday evening which we saw while observing here in southeastern Nebraska. Nice to see such a "quiet" event put on a nice show, both on the sun and in the Earth's upper atmosphere. Clear skies to you.
