Sept 28th Sat+Jup in good seeing for the alt. new
      #6107035 - 09/29/13 08:00 AM Attachment (51 downloads)

Hi All,

Imaged Saturn very early last night. It is very low for me now and this will be my final data for this apparition. This is the 308th Saturn data set I have uploaded for this apparition to PVOL & ALPO. Of course the seeing was poor with considerable flag waving going on but in amongst it some useable frames. When I was processing I noticed that I have captured the long lived dark oval, it is best seen by dragging the image to & fro across the screen with a mouse. The movement helps to pick it out, it is just slightly toward the F side of the CM.
I have measured it to be at +45.4 L3 287, the data point fits my drift chart nicely.

Imaged Jove this morning in good seeing for the alt. Have attached an animation of 742nm IR data sets which resolves a plethora of detail. The individual data sets within the animation range from an alt of 25 degrees to 29 degrees.

Have also attached 3 of the 742nm IR images from the animation, fairly evenly spaced in time and also an RGB. The mid point of the RGB was at an alt of 30 degrees. I think this would be amongst the best low alt Jup data I have had for quite some time.

I note a quite prominent bright oval far South in the SPR, this appears in all 3 attached IR data sets and is obvious in the animation.
Oval BA is well resolved as is detail right across the field.

Thanks for looking
Regards
Trevor

Very nice images Trevor, especially for everything being so low on the horizon. After seeing the "5 to 6/10" estimate in seeing, I again realize that I probably overestimate the seeing here at home.

Your image low in the sky in 6/10 seeing is better than my images higher in the sky, in what I would estimate to be pretty good seeing :/.

Trevor, excellent images! The Saturn is amazing for this late in the season. You can even make out the hex. Nice work and thanks for posting

Steve

That is a terrific set of images Trevor, very nicely done sir. The Saturn image is quite good for this late in the apparition, thanks for including that shot A question for you: when you process RGB sets do you ever include 742nm or other IR data in the mix? The IR shots stand up quite well on their own of course, but I am curious as to whether folks here are combining it with color data to any significant degree. Thanks!

Clear Skies,
Brian

Excellent work Trevor! Top shelf, and a Saturn image this good this late is really impressive.

Lots of detail all around, your scope is tuned within a gnats eyelash! Well done!

Glenn

Thanks very much zAm. Estimations of the seeing are extremely subjective, especially when trying to do so in the absolute sense rather than gauging the seeing best to worst for a particular location, which I think a lot of people do. Several years ago Bird obtained stunning Jup data from Exmouth. He estimated the seeing at 10/10 and the general consensus is in agreement with that estimation. On one of his visits to my observatory he brought with him the raw video of that data. It was amazing, as if our atmosphere had been removed from the equation. Prior to seeing that video I had rated my best seeing at 8 to 8.5/10. We ran side by side Birds video and my best Jup video and based on that comparison I reassessed my seeing to 9/10. Unfortunately I have not experience seeing to that level since. My point here is that it is very difficult to come up with a subjective absolute assessment unless you have seen what truly stunning seeing looks like. The low alt Jup data I have presented here I estimated at 5 to 6/10 but for it to be that good at less than 30 degrees alt means that it would have been substantially better at higher alt, maybe 8/10.

Thanks very much Steve, appreciate your comment.

Thanks very much Brian. Reckon the mix of filters used depend on what you are imaging for. Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder and if you are trying for an result that looks good esthetically then go with whatever looks good to you. As far as producing work of scientific value the various research teams & groups I collaborate with want either RGB, IR, CH4, or even the individual R, G & B channels but nothing else. Numerous times over the years I have seen John Rogers from the BAA send out emails to that effect.

Thanks very much Paul.

Thanks very much Glenn, I am pedantic about my collimation. I have a Howie Glatter TuBlug and Laser and a couple of years ago Bird gave me a Cat's Eye autocollimator for my birthday. I always collimate with my scope orientated as it will be during capture, just need a little cooperation from the Jetstream and it all comes together nicely.

Thanks very much Frank.
