I finally got around to making a solar filter for it using Baader safety film. Once again I am very impressed! The long focal length really brings the sunspots up close. The granulation on the surface of the sun is very clear. Sunspots are sharp with tons of detail. I hope to take some pix soon and will post them here.

Storage cabinet completed. I did it myself and it was relatively easy to make!

Beautiful scope! I just built one too:
http://www.cloudynights.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/5140754/page...

The pic's aren't the greatest but more are coming with a high resolution camera.

It's a 103mm f/15 almost exactly the same size as yours. I saw Saturn last year when I built the mock-up but it wasn't with the 2" eyepieces. After seeing your great pic of Saturn, I'm sure looking forward to seeing it now that my son's scope is finished.(I built the scope for my son.)
I have star tested it though, and what's cool is that black sky can be pointed at, but the eyepiece is full of stars! Also, I can point the green laser at an object and it's right in the middle of the EP. Even saw some far off galaxies. There's nothing like an F/15! The editor of Astronomy Technology Today says he'll put it in his magazine, but I missed this month because I couldn't get the pictures taken quick enough, now it'l probably be the 1st of the year.
I'd put a picture up but this is your thread! I was attracted here because I enjoy seeing beautiful telescopes and building them - and you sure have one here!

Z

Hi GoodAsh,

Great job on the case! It looks very similar to the one Richard supplied with my AR101. The only difference being mine is stored in case with the dew shield off. This allows the case to be considerably shorter so it will fit in my car. There is no doubt that if you invest time and money in a telescope like this a case is almost an essential.

I just read through the first page of your thread - awesome scope!

How did you get the dew-shield from aluminum to brass?

Thanks Ian, your case inspired me to build one! I didn't want to fuss with the dew shield, so I made it longer. I load it comfortably into my wife's Subaru...it won't fit in my Mustang!

This scope was built by Richard Day, Skylight Telescopes of London. The dew shield is brass, as well as the grab bar and counterweight. He does amazing work and builds fine telescopes. This particular scope was featured in the Wall Street Journal last week!

I'm curious how Jupiter look like in that beautiful refractor. Could you do an observation for us and maybe a photo or observation report. That would be great.
It's really a wonderful looking telescope.
Clear skies,
Roland

I'm willing to be the contrast on Jupiter through this scope is better than ANY 4" refractor currently in production.

As soon as I can, I will take some pix of Jupiter and post them. Let's see, stay up really late or get up really early...?

OK, here is Jupiter from this morning. Stack size is about 500 frames. DFK31 @f/15, no barlow. Very foggy out.

Wow, that's really a great Jupiter picture. The cloud structure is really impressive for a 4" FH achromat and I don't even see the blue fringe. Have you used a filter to avoid the fringe?
So it was probably great watching Jupiter through the occular, too!?
Cheers,
Roland

Yes the Skylight AR101F15 is an awesome performer as well as a beautiful looking scope to own.
I commissioned Richard from Skylight to make one for me that was optimised for solar imaging but that could be turned back into a normal visual scope by the simple addition of machined spacers.
I have now owned the scope since June and I have to say the images it produces are awesome as well as serving up some excellent visual treats through the eyepiece.
Please see a couple of examples of my solar work through the best 4" refractor you can buy IMHO

Yep. Televue's Japanese lens subcontractor, Lenspro, is making these for Televue...

Who else uses optics by Lenspro?

Why is TV the reseller, when they don't have any long achros in their own catalog? Who else does TV supply?

Why doesn't Skylight deal directly with Lenspro, cut out the middleman and reduce costs?

Roland,
No filter was used. This scope is virtually color-free! And yes, Jupiter was just beautiful through the eyepiece. I am looking forward to spending many nights with Jupiter when it rises earlier in the evening.
