Forgot my counter weights... new
      #6107756 - 09/29/13 03:41 PM Attachment (30 downloads)

I was in a hurry and forgot my counter weights for my 12"LB, which is very front heavy. This is not the first time I have forgot the counter weights and nobody had a hammer this time, so I had to make do, with anything I could find. It's not pretty but it worked.

Bill

The first time I forgot my counter weights I was hundreds of miles from home and had too find things from friends. This was at the Bryce Canyon Star Party where there are large public crowds and I had to have a working scope.

American Science and Surplus makes half pound donut magnets that are lined with an expy coating. $3.75 each.

The best place for them is near the bottom of the tube opposite the focuser and finder. You can tuck them in the corner so the scope can still be pointed to the zenith.

Everything in my shop can be fixed if I just have a big enough hammer. I guess it's true with you as well.

Look under the hammer.I have a couple of the coated donut magnets, but not equal to the weight of the sliding counter weights.

I use a plastic tub and it has everything in it I need for my scope. This way when I go to observe all I need to do is put the scope, eyepiece case, and tub in the truck. That way I know when I get to the observing site I'll have everything I need.

Best, John

I keep everything I need for my dob including the weights in one toolbox. Forgot the toolbox.

I used a 17 mm Nagler Type 4 as a counterweight.

I also have 12 LightBridge. It has 3, 1# and 1, 2# FarPoint weights installed on the cell, and is still not enough. I have a Telrad and an ES 8X50 finder scope on the other end. With a big eyepiece, I still need more weight. In the future I'm going to experiment with a SkyScout which will make the problem worse.

Harbor Freight Welding Magnets make cheap easy counterweights. The will probably mess with the SkyScout though.

Here's a close up of my avatar pic. Two magnetic weights, a lug wrench and a pair of vise grips on my 16" Lightbridge. Whatever is handy.

Thats my problem also, Telrad and a 50mm SV finder and big eyepieces. When I have the counter weights installed, I'm set to go. I do like the idea of vise grips, will have to put some in my van.

Forgot my counterweights for my 22" (about 45-50 pounds). Pic shows how I handled that situation.
