Charging a cell phone while viewing the sky
      #6110386 - 09/30/13 11:58 PM

Has anybody charged their cell phone using their battery tanks? I imagine if the phones can be charged with the cigarette lighter adapter using the regulated car battery 12 volt system, then a 12 volt battery tank should do the same.

I use my cell phone with Sky Maps to ensure I am aligning with the correct stars.

No reason it won't work using the same adaptor you use in the car.It will add additional drain on the battery of course.Should be about the load of a small dew heater.

Basically charging your phone in the car is just like having it hooked up to the 12V battery, so yes it should work just fine.

Well Big C, the cell phone uses much more than a dew heater. My tank was totally drained in 1.5 hours. It normally lasts about 5 -6 hours. So I need to make sure my cell phone is fully charge before going out to view the night sky.

Here's an alternative I use and love to charge my cell phone and other similar devices. Nomad 7 Solar Panel.

Solar panels don't work very well at night!

Most USB charging adapters that I've seen draw less than 1.0A from a nominal 12VDC source, so it seems that the OP should have gotten a bit more than 1.5 hours from the battery if it was the usual 7.0 to 12.0Ah variety... unless of course dew heaters or other items, such as the scope's motor drive, was also part of the load.

Tim, what is the Ah rating of the battery you're using in the field?

Fred
