Apparently there was no explosion.

Foil debris (from upper stage safe prep for re-entry by venting propellent, foil appears on radar like 'chaff') was observed as the basis for the erroneous explosion report, according to several news stories since Space-X had to debunk the explosion report.

The report gained traction after the Falcon 9 had already deployed it's orbital cargo successfully. The plan was then for the second stage to relight and burn to depletion, to provide more data for the new rocket. The relight failed -- the reason has not been announced but Elon Musk has said they understand the problem and it will be fixed prior to the next launch.

The second stage now orbiting vented its remaining LOX to space to prevent a future explosion, and the venting dislodged some insulating foil from the end of the stage. That's what caused the radar returns. And the rumors.
