I built the dome almost 25 years ago from gores cut from 0.025" aluminum, pop-riveted onto 1/8" aluminum strips. I framed the shutter opening with angle iron as well as making the base ring from same iron. Granted it lacks the fine craftsmanship of a commercial dome, but it works (after tracking down and sealing the leaks) and cost a fraction of a commercial dome.

It's in the planning stage, but mine will be called The Viola Parsons Memorial Observatory. In honor of my deceased mother in law.

No way. A list cannot provide information as to how to get to, and break into an obs.

You must name your obs. Naming an observatory is an essential part of the process. A name and dedication is not so ething old people do for nostalgia. Don't be a chronological snob, please.

I've started a list of names for my OBS that is under construction right now. The Hernia OBS would be appropriate yet not gonna do it.

People don't have to name their observatories; the "essential part of the process" is building it & then enjoying, with or without a name. Not naming their observatory does not make them a "chronological snob", nor should a member be called names, because they do not do as someone else wants them to do.

Perhaps; however if people are reluctant to share information, we respect that!

Just about done with the final assembly of my POD in central Massachusetts. It's been a great project for me and my seven year old daughter, who is an avid observer and my companion in the construction of our observatory. She officially christened the observatory "Francis." I asked why, and she said it just makes sense. I don't argue with the logic of the women in my family.

I ended up naming two beautifully made custom observatories here:

Pilothouse Observatory (it has a real ship's wheel to open and close it).

The Stellar Cellar (built semi-recessed to keep an HOA from balking from something higher than the property fence).

Names I'd like to see get used (let me know if you use one so I don't suggest a duplicate someday):

Iron House Observatory (preferably for something all-metal)

Observatory X

StarHound Observatory

The Open Observatory (Outreach would be the obvious mission)

Roboservatory

Deep Space Observatory

The Astropolis [Observatory]
