Ison and 46P/Wirtanen Together? new
      #6111132 - 10/01/13 12:30 PM Attachment (16 downloads)

According to my SkyTools with the latest ephemeris, Ison and Wirtanen will be within 6' of each other Sunday morning (Oct. 6) at 5:30 CDT. Of course, this isn't just a speedy meeting so should be viewable across the US and I would imagine the world. I hadn't heard anything about this so am concerned maybe I have bad data? Can anyone verify? Should be a great imaging opportunity, I would imagine. Maybe even appearing as one comet? I show Wirtanen is 4.6' coma and Ison is 2.1'.

Tim - To the best of my knowledge P/Wirtanen hasn't even been recover so far during this apparition. Where did you get your coma diameter figure from?

I would also point out that many of the magnitude/visibility "predictions" (and similar coma diameter figures, if that's where you found the 4.6') for faint comets appearing in SkyTools often have no real validity and are based on calculations and vague assumptions, rather than observations. So, use caution whenever citing them as the source for any sort of events.

That's why I asked for verification.

It does not appear in this list of comet rendevous for October

The rendevous of C/2012 S1 and 46P took place in early August 2013 according to the planetarium in my laptop.

Odd but I'll be imaging Ison anyway this weekend I hope so we'll see. So far SkyTools has put me on Ison and Linear so I'm sure the data is correct.

Tonk - Love that site! Been trying to figure out how to capture some unique scenery so that'll help out tremendously!

Ah! Comets + DSO's is a great sub-genre of astrophotography. Its my speciality so to speak. Seiichi's list is invaluable for this work.

Here's one I got off his list a way back - I have lots more but the truth is clouds have killed at least 50% of my attempts. The most disappointing failure was 73P/Schwassmann–Wachmann (B) passing right over the Ring Nebula M57 - I just watched clouds

@Hiro - Seiichi didn't have it logged in his August list either (comet/comet conjunctions are green lines)

Maybe 46P was too dim to pass the filter on his list generator

or they were too near the Sun in the period at least for imaging.
