The Rachel Hutzel Observatory new
      #6017389 - 08/10/13 11:03 AM Attachment (144 downloads)

Construction for our new observatory in Warren County Ohio has begun. Named after my late wife, it will house an 11" D&G achromat on a Parallax mount. It is scheduled to be operational late this year and fully dedicated the first quarter of next year.

Here is a link to the project:

Rough cut of the driveway thru the trees.

When we're out at the site, several have commented on how peaceful it is and how temple-like the steel pillars seem.

What a beautiful tribute to your late wife! It is in a very serene area, that I'm sure she would have loved.

We look forward to following the build, thanks for sharing it with us!

Progress is being made. Most of the construction is being done in-kind by the Warren County Carrear Center. It's actually a course for the school's students as it involves most of the trade skill sets they teach. They do high quality, better than commercial grade work.

Steel support columns! Now that's a permanent structure. Great job so far and a fantastic memorial to your wife.

Great idea to have the local folks learn through doing. And of course, your location is absolutely wonderful. A great tribute to your wife!

Sorry for you loss. As to the build quality, expect great things. Those high school kids do a better job than many "professionals".

Yes they do.

It's really starting to take shape.

Here's some updated photos. Neither rain, sleet, or snow stops these kids..nothing...except Christmas break. They're really getting into it now that the roof is going up. One kid in particular has taken it as his personal mission to come up with the roof retraction mechanism.

When it's all finished, we're going to throw a private star party for the class and their families.

Jeff
