Losmandy G-11 Tripod vs AP Eagle Pier
      #6127183 - 10/09/13 02:47 PM

I currently use Losmandy GM-8 and G-11 mounts to support the scopes in my signature.

Eventually, I would like to implement an AP Mach One and AP Eagle pier to replace my G-11 set up. I'll probably begin with the AP Eagle pier and use it with my G-11 until such time as funds have been saved to purchase the Mach One.

My question for those of you who have used both the G-11 tripod and the AP Eagle pier, do you find them to be similar in performance?

Cost differences aside, I'm especially interested in hearing about areas where the AP Eagle Pier outperforms the G-11 tripod and vice versa.

Primary areas of interest include, stability, ease of use, flexability and product options.

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Best regards,

Keith

The primary area where my Eagle works better than my old HD tripod is I can easily fold up the Eagle and put it into the car. My Losmandy HD tripod was just as stable, but I felt like I was building a bridge everytime I pulled it out and started inserting legs, etc.

I drilled and tapped my Losmandy so I could use the A-P shelf brackets and shelves, but the Eagle is already set up for that stuff and is a bit more flexible. The Losmandy might be easier for height adjustments, but the Eagle isn't difficult.

The bottom line is I am very happy I saved up and got the Eagle. The doggone thing is expensive, but it works great.

Cheers,

Ron

Keith,

Just checking your signature and there is one area that the Eagle clearly beats the Losmandy HD: Drastic height adjustment.

I have my Eagle set at 32 inches. This easily works with my Traveler, the C8-HD, and my old STF-Mirage 8 inch MCT. Changing to the TEC simply requires me to insert the 8 inch extension pillar and I'm good to go. With the Losmandy, I had to turn it over and move each leg in and out. I had pencil marks for each scope, but it still took a lot longer.

Unless you are very short, you will need the pillar to use the Eagle with a TEC 140. The Eagle tops out at 36 inches, so factor the additional cost into your budget.

Cheers again,

Ron

You can also get an extension pillar for the Losmandy.

An extension to the question - which is better for setting up on unlevel ground?

Price wise the Losmandy is much cheaper.

I missed the OPS lack of concern on cost difference.

You are correct. I never bought an extension for my HD tripod.

Both are easy to adjust for uneven ground, but the Losmandy has a wider range of adjustments.

Cheers,

Ron
