Eyeglasses and Bino - what eyepieces do you use?
      #6134657 - 10/13/13 10:13 AM

I started a thread on refractor like views through a binoviewer. Everyone stated that I should be seeing the same quality of view in bino and mono. I have discovered that my issue with bino, is that I use eyeglasses in mono, but not in bino.

I now know that I need to wear my glasses with my binoviewer. I would prefer to see the field stop, and not have to press my glasses into the eyepiece to see the entire FOV.

What eyepieces do you use? My IPD is around 62mm, so "fat" eyepieces do not work.

Thanks

I'm planning to get some Vixen NLV pairs myself. Just wish they were cheaper.

Denk D21 is what I use. I don't need my glasses to view, but they've got 20mm of eye relief and work perfect with my power switch in reducer mode.

I'd think any decent eye relief eyepiece should work well. Radians, D21 & D14, as mentioned NLVs. All are good choices and the biggest thing is whether or not the eyepieces are available in focal lengths/AFOV that work well for you and your scope.

NLV's are excellent in bino's. I haven't tried to remove the twist up eyecup but I guess it's possible, they would be as thin as a Plossl.

Try a pair of RKE 28mm (about 24mm of eye clearance).

Hmmm, I never wear my glasses when observing, mono or bino. My binoviewers seem to help a lot reducing the effect of the astigmatism that I have in one eye. I also use a Bahtinov mask to set the focus for each eye, which is a big help.

Matt, I have a pair of 30mm NPLs, and find that they are not too big. Maybe I'll try a pair NLVs, either 12mm or 20mm. I wish there was a 16mm version.

A pair of D14s mostly (lunar and planets)as well as D21s by Denkmeier. They have 65-70 AFOV and 20 mm eyerelief. In addition, they are not very bulky or heavy (I had problems with a pair of Hyperions I tried). On rare nights with good seeing I use a pair of Pentax 8.5 XF.
All of them work well with my glasses on on my 5 inch f8 and 6 inch f9 refractor, also on my now sold Mewlon 210.

Bob I have both30 NPL and 9NLV's and the eyecup is pretty much the same size. I'll measure it and let you know. My IPD is 69 and they are just comfortable for me, which is why I wondered if the cups come off.

Thus far a pair of Denkmeier 21mm oculars and a couple of pairs of TV Radians. All work fine for me (even when wearing spectacles) and none of them are particularly large eyepieces.

I also wear glasses. Believe it or not, my plossls do just fine. Especially the 32mm. I also have some WO pairs, but the plossls seem better with the eye relief and all.

Hi Bob,
If your still interested in the Vixen's the NLV and NPL eyepieces have exactly the same eyecup size. I presume the NLV's have the same cup size over the range?
Matt
