Looking for open source browser/canvas planetarium
      #6137804 - 10/14/13 08:30 PM

I have a project going where I need to be able to dynamically control an in-browser planetarium using only javascript code, and possibly have some animation associated with movement from one point or another.

The intended purpose of this planetarium embedded in my website is to serve as an animation for loading astrophotos. When a user selects a new photo to view, the planetarium pans to the RA/DEC of that object, before the picture itself animates into view in front of the CANVAS holding the planetarium.

This also means it should function as if the user is at the center of the celestial sphere and can see absolutely anything at any time, from crux to the north star and the Summer Triangle in winter... you get the idea.
In other words, a call like:

Code:
 planetarium.goto(RA,DEC,timeForAnimation);

I see a lot of planetariums out there but this functionality is either well hidden or I'm going to have to start hacking to get it. I prefer to check if anyone knows if something exists already that does this.

If can "hack", building one from scratch wouldn't be that hard using jquery.

A canvas planetarium from scratch? Anything can be coded I suppose but the effort is not worth it to me unless the work is already or mostly done.

Some day though.
