Portable Hard Drive
      #6138743 - 10/15/13 10:34 AM

I've finally got a decent planetary set up so I'm going to be taking gigs and gigs worth of video/images. I'm looking for a portable hard drive that can work like a USB thumb drive because the imaging laptop is Win 8 and the processing desktop is a Mac. So, it needs to be able to work on both platforms. Any suggestions. I have networked them together in the past but it was a real PITA, I'd rather not do that a lot.

The Mac is the forgiving platform that knows how to read both Mac and Windows formatted drives. So pick a USB2 portable drive from your vendor of choice (Seagate, Western Digital etc) and format the drive on your PC. Pop a few images on it. Then plug it into your Mac. Your Mac should see the drive and your images just fine.

If you format as a Mac drive on your Mac, your PC will not see it.

add to that... format the USB drive, or Thumb drive, with FAT32... which actually should be they way it is out of the box.
Windows will give you an option of formatting for WFS (?) Windows File System (i think, i am going off of memory, or is it NTFS), and the Mac will give you the option of HFS, both are proprietary, you want FAT32 for both to see.

also... get USB 3 if you can, since you have a Win 8, and if your Mac is new, it will be quicker on both... just make sure one isn't USB 2, because then you will NEED the device to be usb2 to work on both.

My Mac has USB 2.0 and Thunderclap. No USB 3.0. Thanks everyone for the help.
