Palus Somni
      #6146540 - 10/19/13 11:51 AM Attachment (27 downloads)

I usually do not sketch at the time of full moon, but last night was so clear...Saw the penumbral eclipse through binoculars, but the moon was partly hidden by trees. Got out my Omni 120 later that night and did a sketch of Palus Somni concentrating on its unusual form. This was done around 10 pm EDT Oct 19th using Conte crayons on black sketch paper.

Thanks! I've always loved how this spot changes so dramatically with the sun angle.

Randolph,

This is the best time to capture those bright rays of Proclus crater.
Excellent high sun sketch.

This sketch is a good exemple that even with high sun you can make beautiful lunarsketches!

Thanks Jef and Frank. With high sun, I also see the most color contrast from area to area. To my eyes, Palus Somni has a brownish-greenish tint. Don't know how to represent that in a sketch since its so subtle.

Wow, what a nice sketch and nice rays. Your sketches looks really photo like. You are so talented. You master very well the technique. Congrats.

Andre.

Thank you Andre for your gracious comments. I must try to capture this intriguing lunar region under different illumination and see the amazing changes...
