Bahtinov Mask for AT65 and/or DSLR Lens?? new
      #6146745 - 10/19/13 01:52 PM

Hey everyone. Just wondering if anybody knows of a Bahtinov Mask that will fit a 65mm refractor and a DSLR lens since they're close to the same size.
The only local ones I can find that are small enough to fit are ones similar to this one on adorama
http://www.adorama.com/FARFP400.html?gclid=CO2R0r-5o7oCFcZAMgodYxQAcw
Whereas on ebays UK site, I found one like this
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Advanced-Universal-Bahtinov-Mask-DSLR-Small-Refract...
The one on ebay looks like it has much finer spikes/lines on the mask than the one from adorama. Does this make a difference? Which one would be better for focusing my 65mm and DSLR lenses?
Since I'm unsure if I can make orders from ebays UK site I might be stuck going with the one from adorama unless any of you know of any different ones that would work for my needs. I just want to make sure I get something that works

Thanks in advance everybody

Would you consider making one yourself? Really, with an x-acto knife and a straight edge plus a little patience it is not a difficult task. I have four different ones, all hand cut. They work fine, and are practically free.

Thanks for the reply, Steve. I may consider making one myself if it's really not that difficult. What material would you use that doesn't warp or absorb water or condensation on cold nights? and how would you know how the spacing and thickness of the mask??

I have also made all my bahtinov masks using black card or black plastic sheets, all available from craft centers ( well when I say I, I mean my girl friend I'm a spastic using precision instuments. For the pattern you can find a bahtinov mask generator here:
http://astrojargon.net/MaskGenerator.aspx.

I have made ones for a AT72ed, 120ST, 6" mak-newt and 8"SCT. All came out working perfectly even if not the prettiest of things.

I make custom laser cut bahtinov masks on demand. Small masks run around $30+shipping for laser time and materials

I made one for a 180mm telephoto, and one for my ED80, out of a thin plastic folder/notebook (Walmart, $2). To get the pattern, I used the Bahtinov Mask generator referred to in the above post (http://astrojargon.net/MaskGenerator.aspx.), and printed the pattern on some self-adhesive label stock. Stick the pattern on the thin plastic, and cut out the slots with an x-acto knife.

I've used both masks for a couple of years, and they have held up fine. I left little tabs on the outer edge that bend over the dew shields for attachment (rubber band).

Steve

I guess it's the same one as from Adorama except I ordered today and it has shipped already.

I purchased two different sizes of the Farpoint masks from Agena Astro. This after my homemade cardboard masks wore out pretty quick and would blow off in the breeze.
The 2.5" to 4.5" mask fits my AT65EDQ and my Canon lenses very well and it is just hefty enough to stay in place if there is a breeze. I am all for inexpensive and DIY, but not when the manufactured unit works so much better and is very inexpensive to boot.
My 2 cents, YMMV.
Brad

Create one in the Baht Mask generator. Open that file in Gimp and save it as a PDF. Take the file to company that laser cuts acrylic. You'll get a beautiful mask for very little $$$.

Thanks for the replies everyone! They all were helpful. I ended up making my own for now from the online generator and I will see how it works the next clear night I get. If all else fails, I will go with the $15 from hayneedle or adorama so I can focus my DSLR lenses too!
Thanks again everyone!

Here is a link in how to make one using string for a small camera lens:
