Cave 12.5 Question
      #6147574 - 10/19/13 10:45 PM

I am planning on a 9 hour round trip drive to pick up a 12.5 transportable for $$$. Is it worth it. Looks like in decent shape...certainly restorable, but probably does not need it. I probably will not be able to use it right away will have to wait for a few years before I have that kind of space to use it.

I already have a Byers 812 project going...maybe I am turning into a collector instead of an avid user, which I set out to be!

Yes it's worth it. Buy some plastic tarps and duct tape. take the focuser and finder off the tube, wrap it air tight in plastic. Then break down the mount wrap that and stick it out of the way till you have the time. If you took the mirror out, you could stick it up in the attic. Too hot for the glass goods, keep them safe and cool.

As someone who made the same type of journey about a year ago, I would recommend it - I've had no regrets with my 12.5", and a lot of enjoyment - both in tuning it up, and using it.

One caution...I observe with the 12.5" at my home in the DC suburbs while I get a remote site ready for a permanent observatory...if you intend to store it assembled, it will require a significant footprint in your garage, or some other enclosure at ground level (so you can roll it out to observe with - you don't want to carry the components up (or down) stairs if you can avoid it!)

A thought...don't let your enthusiasm trump a thorough inspection of the scope once you get there. Take the time to closely look over the mount, tube, mirrors and any extras you're getting...and ask any questions that inspection raises. If they have an ownership history of the scope, make sure you get it (history has an unfortunate tendency to disappear if not transferred - I have a 20 year gap in my scope's history!)

When we did our trip from DC to upstate New York, we ensured that we had a big enough vehicle to comfortably carry the scope...we used a minivan with both the middle and the rear seats folded down into the floor. Ensure you take some heavy blankets so you can keep the tube and mount components from damaging each other on the trip back.

Enjoy the trip...it's the first step of a great journey with a magnificent telescope.

Congratulations! John

You better turn yourself into a photographer and post some pictures here!

Congratulations on the find! I still haven't found my 12" Cave yet.

Like Clint says, they are priceless, as long as you get it for a good price.

OK..I did the 9 hour trip.....i guess this trip was my Mecca/Medina homage to telescopes.

So one thing I releazed, is that all the people next to the 12.5 inch scopes are giants, because in the pictures the scopes look so docile. When I saw it in person, i was taken aback...these are beasts.

Spent some time chatting with the guy, he is the original owner (he says, lost papers. The damned telescope does not have a single blemish on it, not one. It looks like NOS. The mirror is dusty, but for something from 1972 or 1974, it had less dust on it than my cars rear view mirror. It really is pristine. The mount is massive. I did the risky move of unloading it myself..I was loathe to get the neighbors involved. No mishaps.

WOW! What a beauty that is! It looks like it just came off of the museum floor. I'm sure glad there are people like you that are willing to wrestle around with that beast. Too much of a monster for me. I wanna hear more. Please tell us all about your star images and deep sky views as soon as you can.

Glad to see that you had the same reaction I did when I first saw my 12.5 ... no picture can capture the first impact of actual size. I still see it each time someone encounters it for the first time!

The pictures are most impressive...the tube looks to be in pristine condition! Saw that it has the "old style" nameplate...the focuser looks identical to my '79 model.

By the way...what's the focal length... f/6, f/7 or f/8?

Congratulations on an impressive score!

John

Thanks All. After I got home yesterday, i had to pay attention to those pesky little things called kids. So I will do a thorough inspection and report back. I am not yet thinking of taking the mirror out.

I dont think I will get to use it any time soon. So i was thinking I would clean and lube the drive (i have done this on my 8" cave, so I expect the drive to be identical other than size.

Any ideas/tips would be appreciated. Turks website is supercool.

Regards, Vinay

Could not resist.. new [Re: vvalmiki]
      #6150672 - 10/21/13 09:45 PM Attachment (6 downloads)

I pulled the mirror to figure (pun intentional) year of manufacture.

Also for Jon's registry:

S/N:727700, F6.5, Focal length 79 5/8", Aug 22, 1972.

Anybody have comment on the 1972 crop of mirrors, this was still a number of years before Mr. Cave's health deteriorated.

Regards, Vinay
