Observing the Moonlimb: Mare Humboldtianum
      #6148326 - 10/20/13 12:21 PM Attachment (28 downloads)

I must admit: I had never of Mare Humboldtianum before yesterday But it was even in my small refractor a beautiful target. I guess I was lucky with liberation.
I couldn't see any detail on the mare (except that it brightens a lot from southeast to northwest). But the two great rims makes it very interesting to observe.

I hope I didn't make a mistake in identifying the rims...

Love viewing the limb, Jef. It's often captivating as you're sketch shows. One night examining the limb, I could actually see foot hills falling down in front of higher terrain further away. So cool, like a miniature Smokey Mountains.

Jef,

You don't usually get such a great view toward the limb beyond crater Endymion, great sketch.

Frank

Thanks all for the nice words. It was indeed a beautiful view and - hapily for me - not so difficult to sketch. Sketching the limb gives you really a "terestial" view: like you are standing on the Moon.

André, thanks! I'm sure with your skills in sketching the sun, you would make some super moonsketches.

The lunar sketches are very difficult, but the show with a stunning amount of detail, even better than a photograph.

regards.

Jef.

Yes for sure, but I won't start that task. I would invest too much time making them as real as its gets. No way. The sun is enough for me and much easier.

Andre.

Thanks for the compliment. But sketches (mostly) do not show more details than photography... What I like about sketches is the personal though of every observer. Yes, in that way they are "better" than imaging.

Actually I meant that more than a sketch looks like a photograph, the translator sometimes plays with different interpretations, sorry.
regards.

I agree about the 3-D effect. Your sketch is simply awesome!
