Info about Vixen Porta Mount, older version new
      #6148775 - 10/20/13 05:48 PM

Hello.
There's a second hand Vixen Porta Mount I consider buying, older version, with the according mounting plate.
I like small telescopes that I use as standalones or besides my 6-12" ones. I currently use three, a WO 66ED refractor, a 102mm C4 MCT and a 130mm SW Heritage Dobsonian. For the first two I use a Manfrotto tripod (great for terrestrial but difficult for astronomy, with the stock 3D head) and a ultralight weight Bresser AltAz mount with slow motion controls (flimsy but it helped me appreciate the slow motion manual controls). I can mount all three on my Nexstar 6/8 SE mount but I prefer no electronics for those widefield or planetary sessions. I don't do photography.
For a couple of years I am thinking of a better lightweight, manual AltAz mount. A few are available here: SW AZ3, AZ4, AZ5 and Vixen PortaMount II and mini Porta Mount. A friend of mine had the Mini and he told me not to get it, as it is insufficient for planetary. AZ3 the same. AZ4 and AZ5 are better with steel tripod (reminding the Nexstar) but less portable and no slow motion. I targeted the Portamount II but now the older model comes as a bargain.
What do you think? Will that suit me?
I use 4 0.5kgr of gym's wrist weights to lower the weight center and three vibration suppression pads with the Bresser; I will use it with the Porta also. My tubes are all short and lightweight but I regularly put ES100s and Nagler T4s/ Delos on the focusers. The Mak is used in higher magnifications but the others too occasionaly. For heavier work I rarely will use my Nexstar mount that is very steady for such organs (the Heritage has the Dobson mount also).
Thank you in advance.

No feedback yet. Since i am confused about the Porta, Porta II and Mini Porta options, can anybody comment on their differences? Has the Porta a 20lb load as the Porta II, or the Porta is in fact the Mini Porta of today?

I think there is little difference between the Porta and Porta II in the mount construction itself except the tripod that is provided with it.
I bought a Porta mount a few years ago without the tripod.
My Porta mount is good for short OTA weighing up to about 12 lb.

I make an adapter plate and use the Porta mount on my photo tripods. The photo shows the Porta mount with the adapter plate with the 3/8” screw hole. There is also a modified Porta mount shown.
The adapter plate is now available from Vixen and others to enable the Porta to be used on a standard photo tripod with 3/8” screw thread.

This is interesting. I have a nice Manfrotto tripod that is very tall. I could use binos with the combination. Do you have a link with the plate?
Tomorrow morning I'll have my Porta.

I need 2 adapters for my original Porta Mount, you can see a pic here with the parts and their designation (do a google search from there:

PortaMount to 3/8" mount.

The problem is that the Vixen #3942 plate has a 1/4" hole, and other than drilling and tapping out a 3/8" hole yourself, I end up using the Manfrotto 120 as pictured.

I got it and I like it very much. I might make wooden legs for it sometime.

Yes, that's the adapter! fyi for the tripod, I have it on a Oberwerk Wooden Tripod; another option would be any surveyor's tripod (iirc Manfrotto actually makes an adapter for surveyor's tripod as well).

I ordered the adaptor. I'll try the mount this weekend as is and with my Manfrotto tripod. I have a carpenter friend, he allready made 3-4 wooden tripods, asking just the materials' worth. He might make a custom tripod for me.
