Maurolycus at sunset
      #6157903 - 10/25/13 05:38 PM Attachment (17 downloads)

Maurolycus at 4 am EDT 10/25 with amazing shadows that seemed to change from moment to moment. I guess I would have to call this a "speed sketch". Celestron Omni 120 with 5 mm Plossl, black sketch paper with white and black Conte and white charcoal.

Hi Randolph,

Very fine sketching. It can be difficult to decide when to lock in the view. Sometimes it is better to lock in the view right away and at other times it is best to go slow and wait for that magic moment.
Nice work.

Frank

Randolph, this is a very nice sketch with a technique that accents the varying topography. I like it.

Thank you Frank and Roland. Frank, I actually did "lock" in the sketch by filling in the very black shadows in Maurolycus as soon as I had an outline of the crater. But my gosh how fast everything was changing since this was almost on the terminator line. So I really speeded up so that at least some of the additional detail could be said to have existed at the same time the shadows in Maurolycus looked the way I had portrayed them. It really all adds to the joy of sketching what our eyes see in real time ( so different from any kind of time exposure or ccd image ).

Randolph that's unusually good and it deftly recalls features Ive seen on other craters, notably the terraced crater walls.

Superb.

Pete

The terraced crater walls add a really good perception of depth to your sketch. Fantastic!

Beautiful work. I agree with Ed, the terrace is magnificent.
