Jupiter - 24th October 2013
      #6158744 - 10/26/13 08:37 AM Attachment (36 downloads)

Woke up early Thursday morning to a clear sky so quickly got the 8" Dobsonian out.

Jupiter was very high in the sky and very bright and by chance the GRS was on view, my scope was not fully cooled but still a nice amount of detail was seen.

Also had a quick look at Mars - the phase and white polar cap was easy and a large thin dark patch could just be seen - it turned out to be Syrtis major - not worth drawing yet though.

Here's Jupiter - Orion Optics 8" F/6 Newtonian, x180, seeing AIII, 5:30UT .....

David, still not bad detail not yet cooled in AIII seeing. Just curious, did you suspect the GRS to be a bit redder? I only saw it briefly thus far, in modest seeing, and really could not say. But thinking back...maybe it did seem more colorful. Kind of hoping it might be. Wanna get another look soon.

David,

Very nice sketching.

It is that time to begin sketching Jupiter in earnest.
You are off to a great start.

Frank

Someone else reported more of a brick red, too. Cool. Should have fallen out of bed this AM to look, woke to beautiful skies after falling asleep to cloudy ones.

Hi David
Nice sketch indeed!
I've never really done any serious Jupiter sketches but determined to make a go of it this year.

Mike

My second look at Jove this season, I have to agree the GRS has a bit more hue and saturation. It's a little redder, to me, than the pale salmon of last season.

Another interesting feature is the north temperate zone is not well defined. It seems everything from the NTB northward is one large "hood." No distinct NTZ, NNTB or NNTZ.

David,
Nice work. I think the GRS looks redder this year from last as well.

Ken
