Congratulations on getting the scope and implementing some good mods. That was fast! Seems like last week when you posted some questions on the Reflector Forum!

Nice report, Michael.

As an aside, I visited the two other forum sites he mentions. Tried for 10 minutes to register on Stargazers without success, perhaps because I would not permit them to send me info, dunno.
Edit: They must have heard me, registration went through afterall, contrary to what was displayed on their page.

Nice write-up. Enjoyed hearing about your resourcefulness in finding what you needed out in SA.

The Americans have it easy. Even here in the UK it can be difficult to get hold of specialist items or to work out what the European equivalent is.

Excellent report, Michael.

You mentioned the Upgrade bug, and I know all about that. Perhaps my experience, briefly described, will help.

I had the selfsame instrument but found I wasn't using it very much. The problem was primarily that in an urban, light-polluted environment, such as I have, it's difficult to find objects, especially by star-hopping. If you can't see the keystone asterism in Hercules, how can you find Messier 13? (This example may not make sense in the southern hemisphere, but bear with me!)

Sky-Watcher offers a kit that upgrades the basic instrument by equipping it with their SynScan go-to and tracking system. Since I have go-to systems on other telescopes I knew that this would solve the problem of finding objects. But, when I looked into it, and realized the carpentry and electrical modifications that I would have to make as part of the upgrade (not to mention the cost, which was about the same as I paid for the telescope in the first place) I decided against it.

So what did I do? I made a deal with my very flexible telescope dealer, and traded my basic Sky-Watcher 10-inch Dob for one that came with the SynScan system factory-installed. In my case, this was the right decision, and I've been using the Synscan-equipped Dobsonian much more frequently ever since.

I hope this helps.

David

hello guys..

geez, I couldn't find any comments on my little article and thought..hmm, maybe it was bad

only now I figured out how to get to the forum which discusses my article..

Anyway..

Thanks for all the nice replies..I really appreciate it..
and yes, it's been a week or two when I was still searching for the scope but I found it !! (somewhere in the Karoo desert between Cape Town and Bloem).

I have since (yesterday) applied some simple floor polish on the formica track and that really works well, nearly no stiction and much better than my WynFlon spray as mentioned in the article.

I have also primed the base and spray painted it matte black (eh..so it looks a bit more like the new model).
I will post a pic of that once I get the stickers I have ordered.

Still waiting for the fan template and flocking material.

Yesterday I ordered a whole lot of stuff from Agena :

- Telrad + base
- Self centering adapter
- ES 2x focal extender
- 25mm, 15mm and 8mm Agena Astro Starguider ED (paradigm ED)

So together with my GSO 42mm SWA, cheshire sight tube and Orion laser collimator deluxe I think I have it covered for now.

Well...

the Skywatcher logo you see on the
side of the base will be painted over and redone.
