Using Telrad and Mirror/Dew Shield
      #6164282 - 10/29/13 10:18 AM

Chaps

Recently, some of you kindly advised me on possible alternatives to the stock viewfinder for my CPC 925. To surmise, the Telrad was mentioned most.

However, looking [straight] through a Telrad does not overcome issues surrounding a dodgy back! But...I have since discovered that a flip mirror can be added to the Telrad allowing a more comfortable viewing experience when the scope points at all angles.

Have any of you used a Telrad with this device attached, and can offer any feedback to its usefulness?

Cheers, Matt S

Yes, it works fine but, surprisingly, takes a little bit of practice. Worth adding to the TelRad.

Well I practiced and practiced and practiced some more attempting to use Telrad with the mirror to function as a Right Angle finder ...

I never mastered the "art" its always been a ROYAL PIA for me to use it that way...

I gave up...

what can I say!

The Telrad on my CPC 1100 was originally on my C8. On the C8 it was mounted back near the mirror, opposite the finderscope. Soon after starting to use the Telrad I realized I needed a dew shield/cover for it. I decided to go for the swing away cover with the mirror. It did take some getting used to but after 3 long observing sessions, I finally got the hang of it. However you'll never get the same feel using the mirror as you do looking straight through.

On the CPC 1100 I mounted the much further forward, just barely behind where the dew heater goes. Having the Telrad mounted forward drastically reduces the need to use the mirror or squat down under the scope to use the Telrad.

In summary I'd pass on the mirror option but I love the swing away cover/dew shield.

-Mike

Living in the south, I found the DEW-NOT heated strip for Telrad to work even better than the swing cover, but SCOPESTUFF indicates it's been discontinued. I'd buy an extra if I could find it! May be something to watch for.

MattS,

I've been using my Telrad with dew-shield/flip-mirror for years - works great. Depending on what you are viewing or shooting, the addition of the flip mirror, IMHO, makes the Telrad easier to use - when targets are directly overhead especially!

Hope this helps,

CTSS
