My first DSO sketch--M50 new
      #6171910 - 11/02/13 12:52 PM Attachment (39 downloads)

This is my rough draft of M50 in the constellation Monoceros. I used black Strathmore paper, a white gel pen for the brightest stars, white charcoal pencil for the mid-range stars, and two colored pencils for the faintest stars (Cloud Blue and Medium Gray).
Again, it is a rough draft (I haven't cleaned it up in Gimp, etc...), and a first try. Hopefully, tonight I will get a second shot.

I would be grateful for any comments or helpful advice. I would also like to know if anyone has an idea for a less ambitious open cluster to go for??

Wow! I think that is a great job. I would go for whatever suits your fancy. We are moving into a great season for open clusters.

I like M41. I find it has some hidden colored stars mixed in. It should look fabulous in your 10 inch.

Ken

Nice. I like the color on the fainter stars.

Thank you all for the kind words. Ken, I think I will take your suggestion for M41. Knuklhdastnmr, I got that really faint star look by starting with a light touch with a white charcoal pencil, dabbing a bit off with a kneaded eraser, then going over that with a Prismacolor cloud blue pencil, or for the very faint stars, a medium gray pencil.

Yes, you must have some great skies. Look at all those stars. And the nebula. Very nice.

The only advice I might offer is to find a way to image your sketch so it's more flat and the lighting more even. Not sure how to do that other than trial and error.

My dark sky site is at my mother-in-law's 10 acre abode out in the country. It's a green-transition to blue Bortle area. And I agree, the image could be improved. Practice, and all that... thanks for the advice!

Good luck and keep up the sketches. It's a great form of observing and sharing them.

A+ for a magical piece of property like that! Very good sketch. There's a particularly impressive amount of nebulous information there. Looking forward to more of your work.

Fine sketch. If you like you can add some information (telescope, magnification, FOV,...).
