OK, but he states in the ad that the reserve is $3k. Why not just make your first bid $2,999?

I haven't sold anything on eBay in years, so the rules may have changed. But as I recall, you pay a listing fee that is based on your starting bid. So it is less expensive for the seller to have a starting bid of $0.99 and a reserve of $3,000 (even though the reserve auction incurs another fee) than to have no reserve and start the bidding at $3000.

That is a good point Steve. However, I think that the seller gets more people interested this way. Sort of like a dangling a carrot out there. If the seller starts at $3500 a lot of people would take one look and never look back. This way more people are going check back to see what the price is and maybe think that they want to give it a shot. I know Ebay discourages people from using a reserve because they claim you will get more bidders without one and maybe a higher final price. A lot of sellers are afraid that without a reserve they will not get there minimum price. From what I have seen if the item is something that is highly desirable the fair value of the item will reach its goal without any issue. But hey, it is a 4" Unitron, you got to love it

OK, but he states in the ad that the reserve is $3k. Why not just make your first bid $2,999?

If you do, you'd better be prepared to pay that much for the scope because the seller could always remove the reserve.

But this auction is on A-Mart.

I am sure there are other bidders out there that are very interested. I would buy it just to get that little tool box.
Between the super unihex, the unitron light, the weight driven drive that little tool box is sought after.

Hmmm...

i think that scope was the 7th item on my ebay list I posted earlier. Also, I swear I have seen a thread on this scope here on cloudy nights classic.

I sometimes get called away or have to switch screens in the middle of reading a post. When I get back to CN I sometimes forget where I left off. I miss a lot of posts & links.

Wow. Only 9 hrs left. Things should heat up today. Can anyone tell if it has the super focuser? It seems that a 4 inch Eq. should, but its hard to tell as its only seen in the photo of the entire setup and its dark! The Unihex is a standard Unihex A.

Just bidding for fun. Do not really need another 4" Unitron. You do not want to know how many I do have

The auction listing for your eventual estate sale will be a future CN Classics thread all by itself.

Not your time yet. I thank the Lord for every day I wake up. I'm almost at the age that my dad passed away. Got to beat him, at least.

Isn't this the one that in Central KY? If so, I would imagine Lexington? I live right off of US27 which goes straight into Lexington, about 80 miles from my door. That would be quite a savings in shipping.

I understand. Strange thing while in the hospital I am not sure what state I was in, but I was told I still have the Lords work to do. I sure hope I find out what that will be.

Mayflower reflector? Brand new?

ebay link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/REFLECTIVE-TELESCOPE-/221325488878?pt=US_Telescopes&a...

The Japanese seem to have mis-spelled Equatorial on this one & the seller provides very little info on the scope, but I believe it has to be a Mayflower from the early/mid 70s. See catalog pages from '74....looks like the one:

OK, I broke down and bought a "classic" scope that was listed in this forum recently.

I'll spill the beans when it gets here and I've opened the box. It was 500 miles away, driveable, but a 1000-mile round trip is an all-day excursion, even in the RX-8, and about 4 tanks of gas. Shipping is far cheaper.

It will join my 60mm f/16 Penncrest equatorial & 10" Cave Custom Deluxe, the only other "classic", commercially-made scopes in my arsenal at the moment.
