A value has been established it seems.

Most of the bidders including me already have 4" unitrons. So we were just having fun. Very surprised it did not sell. If that scope was put on ebay it would have parted out well over $4000. The mount with the legs and the tray are worth around $2000. This is just bad timing. Xmas and all.

So, if you take away the buyers "just having fun" is what you're saying is the value would have been much less ???
I agree about Christmas timing but it would have made one nice Christmas present... too bad I couldn't "sell it' to my wife.
I'll probably end up with a lump of coal in stead of a 4" Unitron anyway. Oh well.

Kind Regards,

Ron

I do not think the value of the scope was established because the highest bid was only $2300. To think that would be foolish. It appears that no one in the Unitron club on astromart really wanted to buy the scope right now. If you search astromart for 4" unitrons you will see the average price is around $3000. However, that would be without all the extras that scope came with. It is rare to see one will all the boxes including the tool box.

Not sure what the value really is, and you certainly have more knowledge than I in this matter, but the hobby depends upon bringing new people in and not necessarily having a 4" go to someone who has a few already. When someone sees a price of $2325. for example I believe they have to think to themselves "why should I pay $4000 for something that, in an auction among knowledgeable people, the highest bid was $2325?" The ability to "get out" of something is, sometimes, as equal or greater than the ability to get into something. And no one wants to get out of something for $2325 that they paid $4000 for, worth it or not.
I see a lot of parallels with old cars which I do know something about... cars that were worth $50,000 3 years ago and now worth $20,000 IF one can even sell them, and that's a big if.. Of course some cars that were worth $1,000,000 are now worth $5,000,000 so it goes both ways.
I'd like a 4" Unitron but after seeing where this auction ended up I would be VERY reluctant to pay more than $2500. And that may mean I will never have one. But I have my 3" so I am somewhat happy (except for living in the Light Pollution Capital of the Universe, Chicago, it seems).
Again, I'm a newbie with FAR less knowledge than you and probably everyone else on this list but that's how I see it.
Of course, I will still try to convince the long suffering Saint Joanna (my wife) that this would make an excellent Christmas gift for me...
Kind Regards,

Ron
As a side note, I have been picking up all the under $25 scopes on CL for a personal outreach - this year it's Toys for Tots. A worthy cause in SO many ways. HINT HINT.

I would have loved to have hopped in the car and headed south on US27 to pick it up Jim, unfortunately doing so would put a quite a dent in my nest egg which I am not about to do just now. If I ever do get a 4 inch Unitron it will likely be the alt-az, but right now, I'm content with my smaller Uni's and this way I can always dream- the Holy Grail so to speak.

Hehe. Yep. I bought a straight and complete Porsche 944 for $500. The Fuchs wheels were worth that. I don't think many people will find that sort of opportunity.

OK, I broke down and bought a "classic" scope that was listed in this forum recently.

2 days now and still no word from the seller. I hope I didn't make a mistake. Maybe they are busy with Thanksgiving preparations.

Prepare to be underwhelmed. It ain't no 4-inch Unitron Of The Gods.

I'll wait a bit longer, want to make sure it's real.
