I also paid too much for it, but you know how it goes.

Sometimes you just gotta have it. So what if I'm eating Raman noodles for a month?

I would love an equatorial Unitron. Maybe next year.

I have a few Unitron parts in the shop, I've used the focusers on my home-made refractors. Good thing I'm right-handed.

You will find that as you move up in the Unitron food chain there will be a focuser knob on both sides of the draw tube

...As a side note, I have been picking up all the under $25 scopes on CL for a personal outreach - this year it's Toys for Tots. A worthy cause in SO many ways. HINT HINT.

Ron - that's a worthy case indeed....

OMG Steve, and only $3400 a bargain. But for the purist there is the aftermarket part on the mount and for many we want the Unitron name on the scope. There is also the aftermarket drive. The real drive is worth at least $400, now how do many of you feel the polarex name deducts from the value.

Hmmm, $3400 . Even with freight it's less than the '50 Ford I've been looking at. But then, I haven't driven to Kentucky since I was heading for Fort Knox
I wonder if the after market drive is comparable to a Flathead V8?

Photographed in a dark room. Every picture is unfocused and grainy. Only a Unitron connoisseur could tell if anything is amiss. I only see the Polarex name on the sign hiding the mount.

I agree. For me the name "Unitron" on the scope does make a difference. There are no explanations, instant name recognition. I know that isn't practical and might even be snooty, but I am just being honest. I think it is simply because of the imprinting of the Unitron brand name on my psyche in my formative years when I wanted one so much and couldn't have one. Ridiculous as it would seem, and truly is, I would probably take a Unitron 4 inch alt-az over a 4 inch Polarex eq. That is absurd! But true. Of course the cost differential would also come into play. On the other hand, I would just as soon have a folded Polarex as a Unitron. Isn't that crazy? It's probably because I never saw a folded Unitron back then. Psychological conditioning during youth is a hard thing to overcome, even when one get older.

OK, I broke down and bought a "classic" scope that was listed in this forum recently.

2 days now and still no word from the seller. I hope I didn't make a mistake. Maybe they are busy with Thanksgiving preparations.

Three days and not a peep from the seller. I have a feeling they posted the auction then got out of town for the week, and are not checking email. Probably surprise them when they return and find the auction ended early. Still, how hard would it be to just send me a note that there would be a slight delay in shipping?

Either that, or I got taken. I've gotten refunds from PayPal before, for sham auctions/dishonest sellers. It takes at least a month however. I'm still holding out hope that it's just an honest, albeit inept, delay on the seller's part.

Stay tuned.

I'm very hopeful you will get your scope Chuck. People are just real busy with families/travel this time of year.

Happy Thanksgiving

Hi Terra,
My reaction won't be a surprise I suppose ;-)
I know that for most of the American collectors the brand Unitron is more appealing than Polarex.
For me it's the opposite. I was raised with Polarex. I Like the sound of the name more. It's more related to astronomy than Unitron. In fact the brand Polarex is older than Unitron.
Now I don't make any difference any more. Polarex or Unitron, it are great scopes...
Warm regards,
Xavier

I do not care about the name on the focuser.......Polarex or Unitron they all look the same to me.I even have one with Weltblick on it ! ( and did also have a Meridian branded one from Sweden )
These names are only the different trade names and for me the only real name is Nihon Seiko Kenkyusho telescope ( in Japan the trade name was Seiko Scope and so the real name )

For many many years, Ferrari collectors eschewed the Dino 246 GT because it didn't have the Ferrari name plate and not that many years ago could be picked up for $30-50k. Now, good versions are million dollar cars.

So, you're not alone, but don't get caught out.

[edit] Corrected the model from 346 GT to the correct 246 GT (just fat fingered the number)

Did you mean the Dino 246 GT? The 246 was destined to be desirable. First mid engine road car, low production numbers, beautiful coachwork and still old school build quality. The 308/328 are not very pretty by comparison. Notice how the 360, 430 and 458 design are more similar to the Dino.
