If you are going to buy it can you let me know? I am trying to figure a way to get down there to look at it. I don't want to buy it if another CNer is going after it.

It's all yours if you can make a deal. I'd love for someone here to give it a good home. Best of luck.

Bob,

Thank you for getting back to me on this. Sent an e-mail to see if it still available and set up a time to look at it.

Thanks,
Jack

Hmmm... 4"...5". Mak-Cass...Schmidt-Cass.
Nope, I'm not seeing the overlap.

The collector in me wants it badly, or for outreach, or for the locked angle tripod all by itself. But I don't get enough use out of the Q4 as is and my daughter wouldn't be ready for the C5 for a few years. So I'm hoping Jack (Copernicus1473) brings it home and puts it to good use. I'll put the $$ into the college fund if I'm good, or my next Delos if I'm not

Amazing what a difference a little paint can make.
My 1897 Zeiss binocular is brass and was stripped of its black paint. When the paint was stripped so was all its value

Wow, I bought a pair of Zeiss binoculars for a great price last weekend ($15), but they're not THAT old (mine are probably early 30s). They're brass too, and painted black. The paint's in good condition, though. But one of the eyepiece focus mechanisms needs work, and two of the tiny setscrews are stuck and won't come out to let me get the barrel cover off.

Chas, Interesting thought, but I've bowed out of this one in favor of Jack (Copernicus1473).

Bob and Chas,

I believe that I was too late. I contacted the seller about setting up a time to meet and look at the scope. I did not hear back from them. I tried the link to the listing but it said that it was deleted. It seems like my luck...

Jack,
Too bad about the C5. Yep, it looks deleted. The ad was about 24 hours old when I spotted it and I spent the next half hour deciding whether to try for it myself or post here.

Not necessarily. It is not rare fora prior owner to paint their binoculars with their own black paint. This nececisitates stripping off the paint. As long as the solder is not removed from the engraving, your binocular might still be desirable if the optics are clear. I agree that this value would be lower compared to a similar pair with original paint in nice condition.

What kind of binoculars are yours? Is a Feldstecher or maybe a Jadglas. Are the prism covers flat or sloped. What is the Vegr= number? Can yo find the serial number? If the serial number is low and depending on the Vegr= number, they still might be worth a lot.

Cheers,
Dan

Hi Thomas,

All you say may be true, but beware of B objectives. They are gorgeous when collimated and almost impossible to collimate when out of collimation. I would want to look thru the objective or have someone I trust test it before investing a couple of thousand dollars in it.

Too bad the mount and wooden stand are not Zeiss. If that was a Zeiss equatorial mount with setting circles on a Zeiss wooden pyramid stand, the mount and stand would be worth the price all by themselves.
Cheers,
Dan

You are correct Dan. The State museum has a 4" B objective That has comet like images.. It was sent to a guy in Germany for alignment and came back the same, maybe a little better

Yes Mark. I believe that one is a 110mm B. It was sent to Germany to be collimated and my guess is that it lost collimation during shipping back to Columbia. I have a friend who purchased a 110 B on Ebay almost two years ago. He has plans to collimate it and is still getting the equipment together necessary to accomplish the job. I told him if he could ever figure it out, he could make a living doing it. B objectives that are in proper collimation are the exception rather than the rule.
I own a 80mm B that is collimated and it is a joy to use. I am very lucky.
Take care,
Dan
