To All

This is a continuation of the previous thread. Im locking the older thread but will keep it on for a couple of days.

A few reminders :

1) do not post your own ads or the ads of your friends. This is considered sale promotion in the open forums and this is a violation of the CN TOS. Please post such ads in the S&S forum or the CNC.

2) do not post photos from ads unless you have the permission of the person who took the photo. If you must have some reference to the photo in the post, then post a link to the photo, not the photo itself.

3) do not post the entire ad text (or large blocks of it) without permission from the author.

4) try to concentrate on the item for sale and not the seller.

5) Buyer beware - there are some scams floating around, so do your homework before responding to any ad.

6) CN is in no way responsible for the content of these linked ads.

Best regards and clear skies.
Rich (RLTYS)

I've always understood by age its 25 yrs. just like cars, of course that doesn't stop us from calling our scopes a classic after 20, so I think around 20 it can be considered as one, specially if its influenced generations of astronomers.

I think that all of Takahashi's system diagrams show an SLR as one optional element. Makes no difference whether it is digital or not; an SLR is an SLR. All have the same back focus distance.

This is a Vixen tasco that hasn't gotten much attention and is going quick. (I have a 10VR or I'd snag it) the 10VR came with nice .965" orthos, it this does too then it's even more of a deal.

If it was complete it would have a ortho eyepiece but unlike the one pictured the auction one does not look complete.

Wow, you're right. I forgot about all of the extra goodies that came in the box. It's definitely missing the camera adapter. I guess I should pull out my 10VR more often. ; ) There does seem to be something extra in the Barlow though? Maybe the second EP?. I just checked my 10VR kit and and it came with 7mm and 18mm orthos. The ad mentions a 20mm EP, so maybe it's an SR not an OR?. Not the deal I thought, but still pretty nice considering it's all vixen gear.

In one of the pictures it looks like there might have been some other parts in the background. I've had eBay items show up with all kinds of extra bits that weren't shown in the listing, but unless someone here got it I guess we'll never know.

They have this listed as a Celestron, It's a definitely a Quantum (appears to be a Quantum 4), it might slip thru the cracks since they have it listed as a celestron & get it for a good price.

There are 2 photo's of it about halfway down the photo area.

The only catch is it's "live bidding only", you have to be there, no absentee bidding, no phone/internet bidding.
Maybe some close can get it, I can't so i'm posting it here it hopes a fellow CN'er who's close can. Terra?

I think it's a Quantum 4. It's on a Celestron wedge and tripod--maybe that's why they thought it was Celestron.

Looks like a 6" to me. No doubt it would have gone for a couple hundred. If two of you from CN show up, hopefully you agree to share it and not bid eachother up to $2500.

It was killin me i couldnt get there, I was tryin every way for week (damn pneumonia), once i knew i couldn't, then I gave a heads up to some else who was close, once all those options were exhausted i posted it here. Hopefully Ken "Mister Magoo" or Terra (since she hasn't chimed in) was able to snag it!

I don't know about a fair price but if I could have gotten there $250 to $300 would have been my top bid... unless I got carried away which has happened a few times in the past.

I don't have an expert opinion. From what I understand about it; it is in the Questar class. Probably worth somewhat less due to lack of longevity of the company and by being less well known. Not a good answer I know. Valuation of these items are subject to the current whims of the marketplace. True value for some items may not be fully appreciated, while other items can be over-appreciated.

I would say these are worth between $1500-2000 with the case.
Over the years their value has increased while the value of the dollar has decreased. I presume there is a direct relation here.

Well folks, I sure hope I did okay because I bought all that was there for $800.00. I got the scope, the case, the Astrophysics Model 8002 drive corrector, an Astrophysics Model 7002 guider, the tripod with wedge, a case with 6 Lumicon 1.25" color filters, and 3 Lumicon 2" filters that are an O-III, and 2 other nebular filters of some kind. They put it all together since there were parts from the scope in different boxes and they would not separate the items.

So did I do okay or screw up?

There were other bidders that I could not see. I think the bidding started at $100.00. Biggest problem with it is the finder. Someone knocked the diagonal off and the case is cracked. I'm thinking this may be impossible to replace. It also needs a cord for the drive. I will try and get some pictures up in another thread.

For a power cord I'd call Warren Kutok at Photon Instruments Ltd. who is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Davao Optical has moved into government contract work and the owner was neither helpful nor interested at all in supporting Quantum owners.

We will see how long it lasts. I had the AS100 and was not impressed. Maybe the seeing was not good when I used it. However, the little telementor was giving me better views on the same night. Hard to beat that little scope.

The Telementor is wonderful. It's also 63mm or aperture at F13.3 so CA is not an issue and images are tack sharp. At 100mm/F10 some CA is inevitable, even if it is a Zeiss.

That thing is amazing. It is way out of my price range but it is very, very cool. Did you see the Eagle symbol? That would place it between January of 1933 and May of 1945. I'm guessing more precisely between 1935 with the advent of the Kriegsmarine and early 1945 with the Allied bombing and destruction of the Zeiss optics plant in Dresden in February, and the Jena factory later in March. However, I would bet this particular telescope is from earlier in the was; as the war progressed resources would have shifted to the production of more strategic military optical devices such as tank sights, periscopes, bomb sights, gun sights, etc.

Looks like a prewar CZJ scope. After the war began Zeiss optics were identified by the code blc (and rln after 1944) to disguise the manufacturer. I'd say, given the eagle symbol, 1933-1939.

Wow, seems the opinions are that this could be an ATM scope and then they go further to say that the Zeiss engravings could be fake. Talk about causing a stir. I would imagine that the Zeiss expert would be in Germany where they see Zeiss products every single day.

This Zeiss B(!) 80/1200 was on an auction in Vienna on Monday. And the price was VERY good! That`s how old Zeiss telescopes should look like. The mount and tripod aren`t Zeiss (as mentioned).

The price for such an original Zeiss B 80/1200 OTA with accesories, plus ATM tripod and unknown (Steinheil???) mount is fantastically good! The OTA is in almost perfect condition and would only need some rather easy to do jobs to look fantastic.

The tripod is very well made and looks like the ones Zeiss used to sell. A superb looking instrument.

Don't I know it..., but I'd also feel like a schmuck to buy it after posting here. Note to self, you didn't run the location through Mapquest and see it was 59 minutes from home, nope you did NOT do that.

Even a lovely orange C5 has too much functional overlap with my Q4.

Thanks Madeline. If genuine, I stand by my date of post 1935 and pre 1944. I do think the CZJ logo (the one shaped like an achromat) looks authentic enough. However, the lettered Carl Zeiss labels seem perhaps too be rather numerous. I am also not sure about the Eagle emblem- the comb? is being held to partially obscure it as well as the swastika (which is not legally displayed in Germany, however the seller is in Italy). The oblique hood looks correct, however that feature seems to be one of earlier Zeiss telescopes, but then again, the Kriegsmarine emblem could have been added later; but would it be on there at all? I have seen other WWII era Zeiss optics from Germany that were used by the German military and did not have such an emblem. If genuine, this symbol, I am sure, would greatly increase the price the scope would fetch with certain collectors.

Here is another thing to consider, wouldn't a telescope that was mounted shipboard not utilize a tripod? It seems to me that the mount is attached from a fixed post and the OTA and mount can be removed when not in use.

One last point, does anyone else think the OTA appears to be too short for an F13 instrument? Of course this is a terrestrial telescope meant to use a porro-prism, yet it still seems short to me. If you actually make some measurements off of the photograph, it comes out to be more of an F8 or F9.

Finally, why is the seller's face blacked out?

I am not ready at this point to judge it as a 'hoodwink" however these are some of my thoughts on further examination.

It is a neat looking telescope, and if found genuine, it will certainly be rare given its markings.

On the other hand, the appearance of the logo appears to be correct, taking eventual angling of the camera into consideration. Lots of the details on the tripod also seems consistent with the tripod used on the Zeiss Asegur 63/850mm travelling telescope. Zeiss DID began to change the design of their scopes just before the war, so I consider it highly likely that just because we can't immediately find a matching scope whose history is not in doubt, that doesn't mean this scope isn't a bona fide Zeiss. The intricate and complicated details on the mount and the complete absence of hex or philips head screws virtually guarantee that it's not a modern fake. I mean, look at the details, it would take lots of expensive machining to fake this thing to this degree of historical accuracy.

And I've seen AS 110/1300 objectives before, so they unquestionably exist as well.

My early Telementor T1 has no Zeiss logos or markings whatsoever. Part of that reason is due to legal dispute over who had the rights to use the name, the Carl Zeiss Jena Germany company in the East, or the portion of the company in the West. The Telementors were made in the East, and given that the government was Communist, there may have been ideological reasoning about using logos and labels as well.

Zeiss discussion on German astronomy forum.

I don't quite follow all that is being said. Google Translate is not quite getting it done for me. I think in one of the last posts the seller is saying it was made in Italy under license by Zeiss. There is also a photo on the first page purporting to show the same scope, before restoration, by an Italian name. It sure looks like the identical scope.

Thanks

What do you mean? I only see text on the lens cell, the focuser cell and the porro prism. The focuser is unusual, in that it is a helical design, so perhaps Zeiss put the letters on the focuser cell, instead of on the focuser, as they usually did. Remember, the letters on the lens cell are usually hidden by the dew shield (or sun shade, which is probably more correct).

The Kriegsmarine of course also had support troops on land.

If you compare with the scopes on page 26 on this 1928 Zeiss catalogue, you'll see that the 110/1300mm instruments are indeed looking a bit short. This is because of the rather forward position of the objective in the sun shade/dew shield and the oversized tubes Zeiss used. The tubes for 110mm scopes are about 130mm OD.

If one looks closely at the Carl Ziess Jena lettering in the symbol you will see the letters are not the same as seen on hundreds of carl ziess jena logos I have seen. The "C" is not the same, the "J" is different, the "A" is different. The Carl Zeiss is not centered properly. the "E" is different. If you look closely, you will see what I mean.

Thank you for clearing those points up Thomas. You have much more experience in matters Zeiss than I, and I most appreciate your input. My first inclination was that the telescope was the genuine article, then I began to wonder if it might possibly not be. Now I am leaning back towards my original premise. It will be most interesting to see how this all turns out. It is indeed, a very interesting telescope.

The Germans over on Astrotreff.de are extremely sceptical about the Zeiss 110/1300 spottingscope. It appears to be a fake. There's pictures of a completely identical instrument from Filotechnica Salmoiraghi.

http://www.astrotreff.de/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=158071

Zeiss experts with access to archives have been unable to find anything identical made by Zeiss. A response from the seller claims that the scope is a prototype for the telescopes later built by Salmoiraghi under license from Zeiss...

I now understand my confusion and why I was initially fooled. The scope really IS old, but it's not a Zeiss (though the porro prism might be, who knows) it just looks a lot like one.

Heavily edited. I had skimmed the German forum too quickly and was too tired to pick up all the details.

But I don't get enough use out of the Q4 as is and my daughter wouldn't be ready for the C5 for a few years. So I'm hoping Jack (Copernicus1473) brings it home and puts it to good use. Wow, I bought a pair of Zeiss binoculars for a great price last weekend ($15), but they're not THAT old (mine are probably early 30s). They're brass too, and painted black. The paint's in good condition, though. But one of the eyepiece focus mechanisms needs work, and two of the tiny setscrews are stuck and won't come out to let me get the barrel cover off.

Not necessarily. It is not rare fora prior owner to paint their binoculars with their own black paint. This nececisitates stripping off the paint. As long as the solder is not removed from the engraving, your binocular might still be desirable if the optics are clear. I agree that this value would be lower compared to a similar pair with original paint in nice condition.

What kind of binoculars are yours? Is a Feldstecher or maybe a Jadglas. Are the prism covers flat or sloped. What is the Vegr= number? Can yo find the serial number? If the serial number is low and depending on the Vegr= number, they still might be worth a lot.

Cheers,
Dan

Hi Thomas,

All you say may be true, but beware of B objectives. They are gorgeous when collimated and almost impossible to collimate when out of collimation. I would want to look thru the objective or have someone I trust test it before investing a couple of thousand dollars in it.

Too bad the mount and wooden stand are not Zeiss. If that was a Zeiss equatorial mount with setting circles on a Zeiss wooden pyramid stand, the mount and stand would be worth the price all by themselves.
Cheers,
Dan

Yes Mark. I believe that one is a 110mm B. It was sent to Germany to be collimated and my guess is that it lost collimation during shipping back to Columbia. I have a friend who purchased a 110 B on Ebay almost two years ago. He has plans to collimate it and is still getting the equipment together necessary to accomplish the job. I told him if he could ever figure it out, he could make a living doing it. B objectives that are in proper collimation are the exception rather than the rule.
I own a 80mm B that is collimated and it is a joy to use. I am very lucky.
Take care,
Dan

Hi Dan.
Optics are in excellent condition and sharp. Serial 5093. Sloped prism covers. Feldstecher Vegr= 12. 25mm objectives. I bought it with case exactly as shown in my pictures 33yrs ago at an antique shop in Canada.

I believe that I was too late. I contacted the seller about setting up a time to meet and look at the scope. I did not hear back from them. I tried the link to the listing but it said that it was deleted. It seems like my luck...

I jumped the gun, i was thinking it was a pre 1976 small round base C5.

Chas

WWII German anti-Aircraft binocs-10x80 new [Re: CHASLX200]
      #6193538 - 11/13/13 09:28 PM

Here ya go:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/WWII-German-Flak-Binoculars-10-X-80-Military-Field-Ge...

These things are cool- they are the inclined eyepiece binoculars. They weigh a ton and require a sturdy mount. I looked through a pair of these one night in the California desert some years ago and they were fun.

The story in the add is pure hokum though. They rightly refer to them as flak binoculars but then say they came off of a tank rather than an antiaircraft battery where they would have most likely directed fire from 20mm Flakvierling 38 cannons. The "Sgt. York" element of the tail is also amusing.

Cve 10" cass available new [Re: astronomylife]
      #6196226 - 11/15/13 10:07 AM

If anyone is interested, I have been in contact with a seller who will be offering a Cave 10" cassegrain, just like the one I just finished restoring. It is a one owner scope and is located in New Mexico. Shipping will not be a possibility. If anyone would like to get a head start on this, I know the owner would like to find it a nice home. It was her late husband's telescope. It has a unitron focuser, an unheard of hurst motorized focuser control, and the original drive corrector that I've been looking for forever! Contact me through my website email or PM for details. We want to find it a nice home, er, nice large home for her!

I didn't make it there. I probably could have run by there as it turns out, but the Nagler population in my house suddenly grew, reducing my immediate interest in that scope.

I still find it intriguing and if I could find more information on it somewhere, it could rekindle my interest. I especially wish I could find some info regarding the drive that was on it.

Terra, funny thing is I was excavating a 1/4 mile up the road from this estate sale yesterday. It turns out that it is a 3" Bausch & Lomb alt/az yoke mount missing the base. Is that a collectable scope? It sure is one HEAVY scope, two eyepieces, and a few Unitron items which were snatched by another collector(anyone here?)I did manage to get one Unitron solor projection set up for a 60mm, not a great price but I needed one so I am very happy.
Most of the Unitron items were picked through by earlybirds the day before. Someone bought the Unitron camera for $175, I was going to buy it but was unsure if that was a good price or not.

As a newbie it would be helpful to me, if no one else, to change the title when listing new things. The century old chemist has little to do with a scope on SF CL for example, well maybe he does but you get the idea.

I was wondering if or when this would get posted. I've got an idea, let's bump up the bid by $500.00 increments within the first day of a nine day auction. I cannot understand some peoples auction strategy. If two people had not started a bidding war at the beginning of the auction the bid now would probably be less than a third of what it now is.

I was surprised the first time i bid in an Amart auction. Thinking i had won a good deal right at the end, the bidding continued. They run it just like a live in person auction. As long as someone will bid within a reasonable time it goes on and on. It never stopped till it was three times my bid. Items will seek their value, in the begining or in the end.

That is correct Gerald. Items will find their value sooner or later. Does not matter where the bidding begins. I have been at plenty of auctions where I found something I really wanted. If you let the bidding start low then a bunch of people get on board and it might get crazy with a bidding frenzy. With a nice high bid that is still half of what it is worth you get rid of those bottom feeders real fast and get it over with.

I've always enjoyed live auctions, much more so than the online stuff. I'm rather good at auctions and at watching my limits. I rarely bid early.

In the case of the Unitron, I figured what the heck. Do you really think this early pricing will have any bearing on the likely substantial final bid? Doubtfull. Also doubtfull that I'll get it. I'd be shocked if the bidding stops anywhere near my limit. If I did get it, I'd promptly sell my 150.

Somebody really ought to. They are great scopes. The optics are quite good, the out is nice, the color scheme quite tasteful. And this one is mint. The case is in great condition and it even has the tray lamp. If I didn't already have one like it, I'd buy it myself. It is a very good price considering what you are getting. So somebody: Get it already!

As a newbie it would be helpful to me, if no one else, to change the title when listing new things. The century old chemist has little to do with a scope on SF CL for example, well maybe he does but you get the idea.
Thanks,

Well I see that didn't last long!
It does make it hard to follow a thread when you are reading about one scope and suddenly someone uses the Quick Reply to respond to a thread a page back or a new listing that has nothing to do with the header.

I emailed the seller that I want to see this scope tonight.
Any thoughts? It is just down the road from me a few miles so very convenient purchase.
I cannot find a darned thing on the web about it.

I don't think I've ever seen one of these either. Looks original. Mizar made the 4"ers for Meade, so they likely made the mount for that scope, too.

One thing to be wary of: The spotter often was a "mirror lens" rather than an SCT. I have one of the mirror lens versions, and it's just not that good optically. My 2045/LX3 has great optics, though.

I would ask the seller to see a picture of the retaining ring on the front. If it's a mirror lens, it will say "Mirror Lens" around the retaining ring, rather than Schmidt Cassegrain.

Price seems fair, IMHO.

-Tim.

The ones I am used to seeing do not have the altitude circle and the finders generally look like brass-plated contemporary finders. But that is why I qualified myself with the, "'common' reproduction" statement.

I have a friend that use to own a knick-knack shop in Rockport TX.. He had a scope just like this one in his shop that I got to examine. He thought it was a real telescope it wasn't. The scope had a singlet lens, and fuzzy dim images which were also very colorful.

That "nasty chip" would be the "clamshell the size of a goofball" I mentioned. The geologist in me should have used the term "conchoidal fracture."

That was actually me. I couldn't believe the deal, and was actually a little worried that it was a scam and I was going to be robbed when I showed up.

But it was legit, and I got the package for $300. Haven't had a chance to set it up under the stars because I'm on night shift (4pm-4am), but in daylight the it showed no color fringing on anything and nice crisp views.

The package even included a 8-24mm LV zoom, a 35mm Orion Ultrascopic, LV 20mm and a 5.2mm lanthanum EPs, along with the OTA, Mount/tripod and and erecting prism and several tube extenders/backs.

I've been out of the hobby for a few years, since my back started getting bad and I couldn't lug my Nexstar11GPS out. Think I'll get back into it now.

Congratulations! There is a review on this by Ed Ting here, top of the page:

web page

Mr. Ting says that he received some reports of some "optically eccentric units out there." Let's hope your is fine; if not, the mount and eyepieces are still worth more than you paid.

Around 2001 I was looking for grab and go scope to compliment a C8. I thought a 4" APO refractor would fit the bill, based on reading Ed Tings'and Todd Gross's sites, and the Astromart forums and Yahoo groups. (Today, the Astromart forums are moribund. But for many years they were very active, and I would argue the posting was more factual and accurate than any other astronomy forum before or, er, um, since. Hold on while I put on my flame suit). While traveling I stopped in at the Orion showroom in Cupertino. One glance at the 4" refractor lineup on a Vixen GP or GPDX disabused me that that would be a grab and go set up compared to a C8! They had this scope, and the 4" Fluorite, and I think 120mm and 130mm ED scopes. A few months later I ended up at RTMC at Big Bear and saw the newly introduced Tele Vue 85, which I bought with a Panoramic mount.

Back to your purchase: it is an unwritten rule, but still 'required,' that you post a bunch of pics of neat things you buy that were mentioned here!

What an amazing deal. Unbelievable. I bought a very similar package back in 2001 except I had the fluorite one on the GP mount, with drive, digital setting circles and a full set of The LV eyepieces including the zoom. It cost me around 3 large for the package. You got nearly the same thing for a tenth what I paid. It was an amazing scope as well. I wish I still had it. All I have left of the kit are they eyepieces. You are going to enjoy that telescope.

Thanks, guys. I jumped on this not being sure if it was the bargain I thought it was. When I drifted away from astronomy there were chinese doublet and even triplet ED apos coming onto the market that were reviewing pretty well. I knew this scope was fairly regarded 10 years ago, but I didn't know if it was dated, and I could get equal or better performance from some Synta 4 incher for nearly the same. But I figured at worst I could probably sell it for what I paid. I didn't want to miss it while I was researching, so I jumped. And for once, it looks like I hit a winner (unless it's one of the SA plagued units - but I'll try the tapping the lens cell if I see anything obvious.)

I'll take pics when I get the chance and post them. I'm feeling pretty good about this. I'll be honest, my first thought was to resell it piecemeal and make a profit. But then I set it up, and I want to keep it.

Excellent detailed views of the third planet as well as a wide field view of the sky.
It's been advertised for a while so maybe $15 will buy it, an inexpensive scope to BAG (Buy and Give) for outreach.

Totally - not ideal, but do you think it would be unworkably undermounted?
If the mount carried the 4.5" reflector, you think it will manage the other?
Or was it not originally paired with the newt?

...for a classic scope tripod. These make decent "scope buggies", depending on the size. I usually just buy a set of casters and make a dolly using 2x4 scraps. But that's more money than this.

Your right, I forgot to mention that...thanks. The CL ad does not mention local pickup...but I guess they just assume that someone local will pick up the scope.

BTW, the serial no. for this scope is 170320, so that would date this Royal Astro back to the 1961 era give or take a year.

Hi Thomas,

I know, but way too many instruments and too little time nowadays.
And it is a real pity (indeed a shame) to have such a wonderful piece stored under plastic while someone could make good use of it.

Oh, well, that's life.

Hi Terra,

It is/was also my hope. In the last few months I have been refusing to sell single components and parts, but these have been so fare the sole proposals I got. That's why I am now open to split it. But I hate doing that and would *very much* welcome a single discriminate buyer who can take the relay on this Zeiss.

Let's hope. It would be indeed a real pity to see such a split.

Cheers,

I hope so too Max. I do understand splitting and parting in these hard economic times, but it is so hard to come by a factory complete system that is more than a few years old; and it is such a beautiful complete and excellent instrument. So let's hope someone who can truly appreciate it as such comes forward to buy it, keep it, and cherish it, all in one piece so to speak.

Max,
I saw a Zeiss AS100 complete kit in a small optical shop while touring East Berlin in 1983 as a young US Army officer (on an Army salary). I still remember the price of 1200 East German Marks ( worth about 120 DM at the time) and how badly I wanted to buy it, but it wasn't a practical thing to do at the time.
That is a beautiful setup and I hope you don't have to break it up.
Regards,
Julio

I agree about the reserve type auction. I don't understand the downside to just starting bidding at the minimum you would take. Any potential buyers are just going to slowly keep bidding the price up until they hit the reserve price anyway.

Steve

That is a good point Steve. However, I think that the seller gets more people interested this way. Sort of like a dangling a carrot out there. If the seller starts at $3500 a lot of people would take one look and never look back. This way more people are going check back to see what the price is and maybe think that they want to give it a shot. I know Ebay discourages people from using a reserve because they claim you will get more bidders without one and maybe a higher final price. A lot of sellers are afraid that without a reserve they will not get there minimum price. From what I have seen if the item is something that is highly desirable the fair value of the item will reach its goal without any issue. But hey, it is a 4" Unitron, you got to love it

The seller of the 4" Unitron wants more than $3000......maybe a bit high ? If you look closely at the mount than you notice something that is not original.I do mean the part that connects the cradle to the mount ( metal color )....

Well, I see a Scopestuff aftermarket drive and a aluminum machined piece that connect the cradle to the mount. That is not unusual to see. those pieces brake so easy. You cannot find any replacements so they only choice you have is to have one made. This one looks like it was rather well done as it is very close to the original size. If it had been painted black I do not think anyone would have noticed at first.
