2013 eclipse from kenya new
      #6177037 - 11/05/13 09:36 AM

geographic location of where the photos were taken from.

photos from eclipse.

the short version of the story:

- flew 23 hours from the US to kenya through the netherlands.
- chartered 2 hours flight to the middle of no-where from nairobi.
- cloudy up until about an hour before the eclipse started
- sky clears up
- eclipse begins!
- 5 minutes before totality, 30 mph winds pick up, clouds cover the sun

yes, we missed totality.

ah well, it was a great trip. maybe next time we'll get to see totality. i heard reports from other camps in the area that they could see some of the totality through thin clouds, but no corona was visible because of the clouds.

I'm sorry to hear of your misfortune. I was rooting for you.

I've begun planning my 2017 total solar eclipse adventure. I hope I won't need to outdrive clouds.

Tough break. I hope you have better luck in the US in 2017.
I was lucky to grab the 10 May 1994 annular solar eclipse from NH. Got it at the centerline too. Way lucky.
Good Luck, and keep the faith!

I feel for you. I was in Portland (actually, Hillsboro a few miles west) during the total eclipse there in 1979, and it was cloudy until five minutes after totality ended. However, fortunately I had already experienced the privilege of viewing a total solar eclipse in southeastern North Carolina back in 1972 and got to see one of the better annular eclipses up near Yanceyville, NC in 1984 which was just a fraction shy of being a true total eclipse, and so got to see a particularly spectacular show of Bailey's Beads from it. I'm a bit nervous about the August 2017 total eclipse which will pass across far western North Carolina and then across South Carolina down to the area just north of Charleston, because it's in mid-afternoon during the often-humid summers here, and the sky often becomes at least partly cloudy with cumulus clouds or worse, mostly cloudy with building afternoon thundershowers. That could involve a tricky judgment the night before/very wee hours of the eclipse in choosing the spot to go to, and living with the choice should it turn out to be the wrong one.
