Hand controller freezing
      #6183720 - 11/08/13 09:53 PM

So tonight was perfect for an imaging session.....if I only had some luck. Besides many small things not working the biggest one is my handset for my Orion Sirius EQ mount starting freezing. I've had it out in colder weather than tonight and its hasnt done this. So I'm thinking something has gone wrong. I get through all the beginning setting and start the side real tracking and after that it freezes. Its not instant and time varies between my unsuccessful trys. But since the hand controller freezes it stops sending signals to the mount so it stop tracking so I dont even have time to set up guiding. None of my cords are loose. I've never come across anything like this so I'm completely at a loss. I've heard of controllers dieing before but don't know if this is the case or not or how to test if it is or if its something else. Anyone have any ideas?

Oh and everything is plugged into my power strip that is plugged in straight to the house. I have my mount, laptop and CCD on the same power strip.

In the cold I use a electric heating pad (type you buy from the drug store). I wrap it into a roll and use the low heat setting and keep my hand controller in it. I have no problems with buttons and display down to -36c. It could be the cold causing a component to separate and not make contact.

The controller on my Atlas stopped working as well. I happened to be done for the night, was packing up, and saw that I couldn't park the scope from EQMOD (I use "PC direct mode"). It wasn't that cold - the temp was only 27 deg F, (in Wisconsin that's barely "I guess I'll wear a coat weather") but the controller didn't like that.

I'll make sure to rubber band some hand warmers to it next time out.

Yep, when it hits 32 F I start wearing pants!

Good info, and so simple, most people don't think to do it.

I just turn on the HC heater in my iEQ45 hand controller, but with the Z HC, or my Synta HC, rubber banding a hand warmer to them keeps them trouble free for several hours, even at 15 degrees.

If you employ dew heaters, you can also just plug a HC heating band into the controller as well.

Good luck...Paul

I used chemical hand Warner's with my CGEM screen. I never had it get cold enough that just stopped working though.

You could rig up a holder with some ceramic resistors and a 9v battery pretty easy.

Hitting ESC when one should hit ENTER (especially at the start) will disable every function except slewing.
