NGC 507 gxy chain in Pisces
      #6184297 - 11/09/13 09:44 AM Attachment (21 downloads)

After targetting Abell GC 262 last night [posted here] I turned to nearby NGC 507 in Pisces - a fine large arc of 4 gxys 'below' a mag 7.6 star plus maybe a dozen and a half much fainter gxys over a wide field. Megastar doesn't list it as an Abell GC although the whole field resembles one.

Here's a colour version and annotated - hope it's of interest

Thanks for the images, especially the annotated one. I see that NGC 507 and 508 together make up Arp 229. Something to put on the to-do list. I found one reference to the group having 22 members.

Very nice images. I can't remember if I have observed this group with my c14, but will look for it later this month when the moon is not up and bright before midnight.

Bill

Your post of the NGC 507 group is a fine one. As I read the responses to many of your images posted on CN, it's inspiring to note how you introduce quite a number of observers to objects they may never otherwise paid much mind to. And even if we have previously viewed the object, it's edifying to learn how much we missed in an earlier viewing.

If you have the opportunity, could you image the 5-galaxy group centered on NGC 383 in the Andromeda/Pisces border region? While the group is very fine optically, it does not show a brilliant bipolar jet emanating from NGC 383 itself, invisible in optical but enormous when revealed in VLA radio images. The radio jet spans the entire 5-galaxy group. See Alan Bridle's website. It reveals how much lies unseen on either side of our limited optical range.

Thanks again, Dana in S Africa

Nice image, Nytecam. More realistic for visual observers as most of yours are. Appreciate them!

I've seen that chain and it's a nice one. I've missed a few of the more obscure ones but definitely logged 507, 504, 494, 499, 513 and 495. Quite a few galaxies in a single view, or with just a slight nudge.

Thanks everyone for your response and interest of my modest DSO pics:-)

Yes Dana - I'll have a go for NGC 383 field on the next clear night . Had a lot of rain over the last week or so with few clear skies day or night but hopeful soon ! :-)

Nice image nytecam. I admire your relentlessness with which you observe DSO from London. This must be really hard.

Naturally, I could not see the chain in my 10cm last year, just NGC507.

But quite close, there was another Arp galaxy: NGC523. This one was showing hints of its irregularity in my former 130mm refractor.

Also, there is another nearby group which I observed last year - Hickson10. I could glimpse two its members in 10cm refractor: NGC536 and NGC529.

Yes, very nice images.

As pointed out try Ngc 383 area, for it should make a very interesting image. Love this area of the sky. Very rich in galaxy clusters and groups.
