A graphite sketch of Kepler 11/13/2013 9pm Eastern Time. Omni 120 refractor 6mm Plossl, seeing fair. It is now getting quite cold here in the northeast US and sketching involves semi-frozen hands!

Randolph, that's a ridiculously beautiful technique. At first I thought it was a photo! Superb!

Thanks all for the positive feedback. I've always done lunar sketching with white and black Conte pencils and white charcoal on black sketch paper. I am out of that paper, so I thought I'd give graphite on white sketch paper a try. I used a graphite block to create a background and then a chiseled eraser, black Ebony pencil, HB pencil and blending stumps for the rest. I think I prefer the black sketch paper...
Regards and clear skies...
Randolph

Randolph,

A very fine, striking sketch of crater Kepler.
I think I was able to tell this was Kepler on sight.
Well done.

Frank

Fine sketch! I use gloves without fingertips for sketching in the winter.

Thank you all ( my fellow sketch enthusiasts ). Wanted to try this graphite technique again last night on the Aristarchus area but the seeing was horrendously bad ( even though the transparency was quite good ).
Regards,
Randolph

How do you make the textured background areas?

I made the background by rubbing a sanding block on a solid graphite block ( available in art supply stores ) and sprinkling the graphite dust over the sketching paper. I used a cotton ball or two to gently rub this into the paper and create a smooth background. You can lighten this quite a bit by just continuing to gently rub with the cotton balls. I saved some of the graphite dust so I could add more to darken any area I thought needed it. Actually I now have a little jar full of the stuff!

Randolph

Thanks for the tutorial, Randolph! I often wonder how some of you more talented artists create certain effects on paper. This is a great tip that I'll definitely try.

Ah Jason...I thank you for using the word "talent"..I wish I did have that precious commodity. I've simply been doing this on and off for years ( with a four year hiatus when I had to live in Queens NY and had no place to set up a telescope ). I've also used the tutorials on this site to learn something about using black sketch paper with white
pastels and/or white charcoal. Sanding the solid graphite bar to create the background seemed another easy way to start a sketch (on white paper), but I'm sure others have done this long before me! You are already producing fine sketches!
Clear skies ( and warmer temps ),
Randolph

Interesting sketching technique for he structure of the background. Thank you for that idea.

You are most welcome. Hope it works well for you...Have some rags or paper toweling around to help keep things a bit cleaner.
