Comet ISON Rising out the Trees on Nov 14, 2013
      #6194799 - 11/14/13 03:21 PM

This morning I observed ISON and imaged it. Boy, what a difference from yesterday's observations. If you haven't heard, it has shot up immensely in brightness since yesterday and is now naked eye. Its so bright you can see an intense teal-green color in binoculars. They call this an "outburst."

Sky & Telescope and Spaceweather.com both have articles on it that were posted today (Thursday, Nov 14, 2013.) Note my pic in the Sky & Tel piece.

My image below is a composite of a single 30 second sub-frame for the background with an 18x30 sec stack of the comet blended in. I was using a Canon 200mm F/2.8 lens and had the camera on a CG3 clone mount with a rudimentary clock drive. There was no guiding.

Comet ISON on Nov 14, 2013. 18x30 sec @ ISO 1600, Canon 200mm at F/2.8, IDAS-LPS, Canon T3 (modified.)

High clouds were almost totally obscuring the sky when I got outside, but I waited them out and was rewarded with a few minutes of clear skies towards the east where ISON was rising over the trees at the start of astronomical twilight.

I also got some images of Comet Lovejoy that I have yet to look at. Most were shot through clouds, but I think I have enough to salvage an image from it some kind of way.

I noticed the teal color this morning from imaging but sky glow made it difficult to see even with binoculars. I like the framing with the trees.

BTW, it is still 2013

Oops! I must have fat fingered that 4 in there accidentally. I am still scatterbrained from lack of sleep.

The framing was a take it of leave it kind of deal. I was setup for Lovejoy and shot it through lots and lots of high clouds with only a few moments of clearing. I didn't expect to see ISON. But, miraculously, the east cleared for a few minutes and when I lifted the binoculars to my eyes to check for it, I was surprised to see a bright teal-green thing to the extreme right of the binocular field. "OMG, its ISON," I said to myself. I had just seen it yesterday morning so I was not expecting it to pop out of the view screaming, with color no less.

I had no time to setup the shot and move to a better position without the trees, so I just went with it. lol

BTW, I assembled an animated GIF with all the shots I took and you can see that here.

Looks like you might have also gotten a satellite flare or a meteor in your shot too. Looks very nice.

Very nice!
Is that the FOV you're getting with that 200mm lens or does that have some cropping?

Thanks, Dave! And, a thank you goes out to those who commented. They are all much appreciated.

You know, Tony Flanders PM'd me right here on Cloudy Nights. He asked to use the pic I had posted to the "C/ISON Undergoing a Major Outburst" thread in the Planetary and Solar System Observing forum. I said, "Sure. That would be great!" Yep! I was actually pretty darned thrilled with that development.

The only cropping was to get rid of all the non-overlapping portions of the stack due to the extreme amount of field rotation I had. (I just plopped the mount down and pointed it north and didn't bother to try sighting it in.) lol

Here's the full frame base image that S&T also used in their article:

Thanks Mike for the nice report. A meteor and trees made a nice addition to the frame.
