Nah - won't do

now this is interesting information from the Griffith

Originally mounted on automobile owned by Ed Turner of Whittier California in 1933

Shelly Stoody of Whittier, California and his mobile 9-1/2 inch Zeiss Refractor in 1933.

Now which is correct?

According to a Google Books snippet view from The Review of Popular Astronomy, 1933, "The telescope shown above was made to order for Mr. S. M. Stoody of Whittier, California, by the Zeiss Company in Germany, and was originally mounted in an observatory at his home. It is a nine and a half-inch refractor, and the tube is thirteen feet in length. It is equipped in the most up-to-date manner. The idea of mounting it upon an automobile was conceived by Mr. Stoody who designed and carried it to practical completion at the Stoody Company plant near Whittier. He has placed it in charge of Mr. Edward Turner, of 1214 Wheatland Ave., Whittier, Calif., to promote its usefulness from an educational standpoint as may be found desirable, and which would seem to be unlimited. The telescope has a finder, and a binocular eye-piece which enables one to observe with both eyes."

What is not clear is whether Mr. Turner was an employee, in which case the car might be a company car, or whether Mr Turner was an independent individual, maybe an educationalist with an interest in astronomy, who gave up his own car for the venture.

Nice research. Another mystery solved. I wonder if the scope on ebay was made in the WF stoody plant by an employee.

I just spent all my money on a 22" Dob. What a financial kick in the buy.

I did a google maps search for that Wheatland address, because I used to live a few miles from there. Apparently it doesn't exist anymore. Wheatland is a short street with addresses in the 8000s, and the houses look like they're all post-WWII ranch style.

Well...

I'm going to be in SoCal on business next week. I've been thinking about putting eyes and hands on it. I'm very curious and possibly interested for several reasons, but at that price, everything would have to check out pretty darned well. I do figure, if I can make it there, that cash in hand may lower the price a little. The trick is going to be getting the time to go. I have a pretty tight schedule.

We will love to hear a first hand report on the Stoody scope. That has to be the ugliest scope with the most attention I have ever seen.

I kind of like the "industrial" sort of look about it.

I did a Google map from the office to the place and it's a half hour. My best bet is to go straight from the airport. It's going to be a tight schedule. I'm going to try.

The eBay ad says he won't change prices, but you never know when there is cash in hand if he has no bids. I'm not 100% in on this, but as I said, I like it for several reasons and if I can, I'd like to at least look at it. Wish I could find pics of it with the drive installed.

If you're thinking about it, by all means go for it. I'm intrigued, but not committed by any means. It's a cool scope for sure.

I've been checking with Orange Pawn about once a week on the Stoody. To the point it was a pretty funny chat " Oh yes the guy from San Diego area".
I had hoped my offer which was close would wear them down. That was not the case.

The business is true to their word I guess, that if I wanted to purchase the scope the asking price was what was currently on E-Bay.

I called on Wed. Dec. 11th to hear the instrument had sold on E- Bay.

Who is keeping a Santa secret

I hope someone here purchased this ATM classic.

Bill
