At work we have this nice open area next to the lunch room on the second floor. I work at night with almost noone around so I got myself a pair of binocs to use on the "observation deck" . During the summer we had nothing but lousy seeing conditions but now that fall is here conditions are grrreat. So I step out tonight and what do I see but the majesty of Orion. I'm in a fairly dark spot so I got a great view. I couldn't really see more than a hazy patch of sky where the nebula is located. Hmm I wonder how I could squeeze some more power out of my 7x50 binocs? I have an 8" dob but I doubt I could get that by security . That's my Orion story.

A 10x50 pair of binos would show somewhat more, though you'd have to hold it more steady.
For real fun, take a look at the Pleiades with your binoculars, and also look up around Cepheus and Cassiopeia.

Actually they are 10x50. Regarding the dob, I have to go through a security checkpoint but they have an area in the back of the building that's kinda dark . Well, I do have 2 new ep's that I'm wanting to try. Oh the things we do for this hobby.

Maybe you could convince them that it is a very large thermos for your lunch or coffee? Or, perhaps it is a shipping container for... something.

Sounds like a good spot.
You might just talk to security and see if they have ever looked through a scope. It might start a starparty for work or perhaps find they are into the hobby also.

Something tells me that I'd be doing anything but work if security came up for a quick look. Then again there are worse things. For now I think I'll keep my little observation deck private. God forbid someone should tell me to get back to work. lol

No no no no! What you do is take the dob in PIECES! First comes the tube, which you will have to saw apart into little pieces. Purse sized! Yea, you may need to carry a purse, but its for ASTRONOMY! The secondary is a cinch, goes in your pocket, just wrap it up nicely. The stand might take some work, but in a few pieces, it will work fine. The mirror comes last, just as you are going through the check point, take it out of the 'purse' and preen yourself a little. 'officer it is just a mirror to check myself' then it is done and you can have lots of fun!
Or... you could drive to a dark sky I suppose.

Whatever you do dont be tempted to hide the Dob parts the way Bruce Willis's Dad hid his watch whilst in the "Hanoi Hilton" in "Pulp Fiction", otherwise you could be walking in a strange way for a while.
Cheers, Bob.

No cutting my dob into pieces! Seriously though there is a dark area in the front of the building. I'm considering setting up there on my break. I have to build something for the ota to sit in while in transport. Then I can take it on the go. darker skies here I come.

Hmm, maybe someone needs to make a small telescoping dob... Ever seen one of those telescoping plastic cups? I'm sure something could be done with that! (telescoping a telescope... hmm.)

Whoa I NEED one of those. A Zambuto mirror to boot. Yep I need one. And me with an empty wallet. Donations anyone(lol)? Once I build my mobile ota holder I'm gonna take the dob into work for a bit of observing in the back area. They have a pond too. It's pretty nice, and DARK too.

UTI also sells amazingly portable scopes, as does Johnsonian. So, there are ways of sneaking a Dob into a place inside a small suitcase or drum case.
