Barnard 33 - Horsehead Nebula (w/ Data) new
      #6220157 - 11/27/13 07:38 PM Attachment (65 downloads)

Here is the last shot from my camping trip. Barnard 33 (Horsehead Nebula) is a dark nebula located in the constellation Orion almost 1500 lightyears away. Also in this shot is the emission nebula IC434, and reflection nebula, NGC2023.

Unfortunately, there were some weird reflections (top left) coming from the bright nearby star, Alnitak. Stacked FITS below if anyone wants some new data to practice with.

Taken November 2, 2013 from Lake San Antonio, CA, USA.

Higher resolution on Flickr: Barnard 33 - Horsehead Nebula

Stacked FITS data: Barnard 33 - Stacked FITS

Very nice love the colors. NGC 2023 came out really well in this shot.

That's some pretty good detail..and sometimes it's helpful to keep Altinak out of this field..nice framing without that "spotlight" shining in....

Really great data. Your focus and tracking look perfect.
I tried processing your stacked data, but it looks like there are satellite streaks or reflections as you already stated on the left hand side, which I did not crop out.

Thanks for posting your data to try. I have not been out imaging lately.

I processed mainly in Star Tools, then did final color and contrast adjustments in PS.

Darren

Thank you all for the wonderful comments.

Darren1968 - Great job processing! I really like your colors. I especially like the contrast you got on the lower neck of the horsehead.

I had originally framed the shot with Alnitak and the Flame Nebula but Alnitak was spoiling the shot (even in the unprocessed subs). I decided to move it slightly out of frame but still got a bit of the diffraction spikes. I cropped out most of the top and used the spot healing brush to remove the spike in the bottom left.

I don't notice it as much on the smaller spikes but the spike in the top left appears to be a double spike. Does this mean that one of the vanes is not exactly perpendicular and it is picking up the top and bottom edge of the vane?

usually double spikes like that are due to being out of focus. i assume that alnitak is probably out of focus due to being way out at the edge of the field.

you're probably okay, the in-focus spikes look perfect to me.

Great processing pfile. I enjoy seeing what can be done with PixInsight. Once I can dedicate some time, I am looking forward to giving PixInsight a try.

As for the double spike, I hadn't thought about it being out of focus. The spike in the bottom left looks normal, would an out of focus star only show one double spike? I am not too concerned as it is normally not noticeable but am just curious.

Thanks, Pete. It is my pleasure to be able to share the data.

thanks for providing the data-file, that is really helpful!

this is my 2nd attempt in imaging processing at all, so obviously I still need lots of practice and i'm missing quite some knowledge, so any pointers would be helpful

used FITS Liberator and PS

Alnitak is a triple star formation.. maybe you split it?

My attempt at your data
Processing done in Nebulosity 3

My processing:

Adjust color background
Auto adjust color
Digital development
Then several minor iterations using levels
Adjust saturation
Then auto color balance.
Save in 16 bit tiff
Use paint shop pro to mike minor corrections

A fully processed crop (not a crop of JPG); you have some good data in there!
