All my TV eyepieces are from Taiwan.

I recently picked up a few "classic" Japanese TV's (12, 16, and 20mm Type 2's and 40mm Widefield) but most of mine (Type 4's, Type 5's, and Panoptics) are Taiwan-sourced also.

I've seen later T2's and Widefields that were from Taiwan. I believe all the T4's and T5's are post-Japan.

i don't know of anybody that knows exactly who makes TV's plossls. all televue will say is that their manufacturer makes TV's exclusively. it's like it's some kind of dark secret (and it allows them to charge way too much for their products!).

Well, you sometimes do get what you pay for. Al Nagler's design for the Plosssl is an improvement on the standard plossl model, and the lens coatings are visibly superior. Whether the improvements (and warranty - you can send any Televue product back to them for repair) are worth the extra $$ is up to the individual. Personally, My view is that the prices for TV products are fair. The marketplace certainly thinks so. Take the Nagler Type 6 line for instance: 82º AFOV, sharp and well-corrected images, for $280 retail ($235 or less used). That's a heck of a bargain. Keep in mind that TV products are original designs. Not to slag Orion, because they offer great value to the astronomy community, but they are strictly a re-branding importer and can offer a lower $$ based on the economies of scale via selling products that are mass-produced in Asia and that others sell as well. TV has exclusivity agrrements with their manufacturers in order to control quality and I assume keep their designs proprietary.

Cheers,

- Craig

...I should point out that one EP that I regretted selling a while back was an Orion 17mm Sirius Plossl. For my old 8" f6 dob, it was a perfect EP in terms of AFOV, light throughput and eye-relief. I also own an Orion SVP GEM and an Orion cheshire. I do own a case full of ~15 TV products, plus a smattering of Pentax and Antares. Regarding another post in this thread, please, please, PLEASE don't tell my wife what the replacement costs are! As an aside, my evil brother called me this week. He's the bad guy that got me hooked on wide FOV's by giving me a 12mm NT2 about three years ago .The conversation went like this:

"Want a new eyepiece?" he says.

"Not in the budget right now...whatcha got?" the devil on my left shoulder says as it kicks the backside of the angel on my right.

"31mm Nagler" he said in the deadpan tone of a character in a bad Mickey Spillane detective paperback.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(Which is code for" "Yes! YES! OH YESSSSSS!!!!!!")

I am in deep $#!+
