What a lovely crescent... new
      #6255080 - 12/15/13 07:34 PM

I was out this evening doing some eyepiece testing on the Moon when I looked towards the west and saw Venus, still shining high in the twilight sky.

I remembered that Venus was in its crescent phase and I probably have not viewed Venus in such in phase in over fifteen years. So I moved my Dob around a tree and put the Telrad right on the Venus.

What an extraordinarily lovely crescent! In my 26 mm (47x), it looked like a perfectly formed "C" hanging in space! It was quite bright, too....the diffraction effects of my spider vanes were quite visible and indeed had a prismatic effect on the scattered light.

Venus is a woman of mystery and beauty.

I looked at it naked eye tonight before I came in to make dinner. I was again able to detect the crescent shape with my unaided eye.

You know, I was just about to ask that. I went out to the backyard to pet the outdoor kitty and as I looked up at Venus, I wondered if one could detect that it was crescent -- or at least could detect that its phases varied more so than the exact phase.

With my eyes and a lot of blinking (I wear gas-permeable lenses), I felt that I could detect that the evening star was not all that symmetrical, that the "spikiness" I see in stars seemed to be concentrated on the side facing the western horizon.

Yep, you got it! I will keep trying as the months go by - I suspect it gets tougher as the crescent waxes.

I have small cataracts that give ghost images in my eyes, so when I see Venus, I see 4 ghosts in my right eye and 2 ghosts in my left eye, making it hard to see the crescent even at 25x. I'll keep trying though.
