Change'e 3 Lander "Finder Charts"
      #6256960 - 12/16/13 08:15 PM Attachment (32 downloads)

Hi all,

For the first time in my life there is something operating and moving under human control on the Moon.

Last night I was out looking at the Moon and remembered the Change'e spacecraft. I did a quick Google search on my iPhone and found that the planned landing site was in Sinus Iridium. Even though that area of the Moon was not favorably lit, I still imagined the lander sitting there and the rover moving around.

Well, I was little annoyed to learn this morning that I was looking in the wrong place!

As we now know, Chang'e actually landed a bit to the east of Sinus Iridium in Mare Imbrium at lunar coordinates 44.1260 N, 19.5014 W.

Using the interactive LROC images at Arizona State, I found the lander's position and made the following images, each one more zoomed in than the last. The lander's position is marked with the red cross-hair.

Flip/rotate as you need for you optics and enjoy!

First the "wide angle view":

Michael, Thanks for doing the leg work on this one. Nice to get a good idea of the area I guess we'll have to call "Chinatown"

Wow, so was it the Straight Range on the horizon of the descent video they released!

I spent last Saturday night with my TOA observing the Change'e 3 landing site, with magnification's approaching 600x since the moon was so vivid and the seeing conditions were 5/5 with no wind. Perfect timing for survey around that landing site in Mare Imbrium. I found some web photos I modified and made one off of Stellarium to help me locate the landing site easily. It was a fun night. Started out observing Venus, in the daylight first, then moved over to watch Europa transit Jupiter, then moved over to the moon for a few hrs, then back to Jupiter to watch the transit of the GRS moving across the Jovian Surface. It was a fun night and very clear.

...and finally the 3rd photo with even more details. The red circle was where the Lander was planned to land, the other marking to the left was where it actually landed.

Is there a web page on this rover? Very glad to see some one going / I was 12 when Neal was there / Unless you were alive then hard to describe It was a very big deal / 1000 years from now that is one date that will be known . What a shame how things have gone after that . Congrats to China
