Hafield Lunar Atlas new
      #6258690 - 12/17/13 06:13 PM

Hi all,

I stumbled upon Hafield Lunar Atlas this afternoon, specifically the 2012 "digitally remastered" version, in which all of the original photographs were replaced with newly sourced digital versions.

I like the clean maps, which are a little easier to read in many respects than Rukl's.

The Atlas hints that it was one of the primary atlases for use at the telescope during the later 1960s and later decades.

Did any of you use it or still use it?

I have a copy, and use it from time to time. I like it.

I have both the standard and the SCT (mirror image) versions.
They are a little dated, but they are easy to use.

Tom

I use it, and still really like it, even though most of us can take better photo's with today's stacking process, It is a great resource for showing the different phases of lighting that craters go through.

Read the original post carefully re; the photographs in *the new edition*...they are *not* the original fuzzy film shots using Hatfield's 12" scope..but are instead altered and enhanced images derived /layered using LRO data applied to the original images. How effective this was (and how improved from the original) can't, unfortunately, be seen from the Amazon preview of the book, as none of the atlas pages are featured.

Thanks Mardi, for pointing that out. The web site says: "derived from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter data, with scanned copies of Commander Hatfield's photographic plates, using the author's own software." Hope it's as good as they say it is. Photo Q6,Orion camera not a very good night, but RegisTax 6 does the trick.

Hmm, republished a year ago, now, and no reviews yet.

Original images remastered. Would have to see one in person before committing.

Don't know if I'd want a remastered, prettied-up version. For me, it's a moment in time; Hatfield's own photos and drawings. I like it the way it is.

Yes. Leave it as a historical document. There are many other modern atlases (printed & electronic) for those that want higher resolution.
