Roman Goddess of Love - December 21, 2013 new
      #6266771 - 12/22/13 11:56 AM Attachment (14 downloads)

The only two sketches of Venus that I have were done almost two years ago during a gibbous phase. It is currently in a beautiful crescent phase which I decided to sketch. Upon close observation there is quite a bit of detail that can be seen. It's not just a bright little sliver in the sky. The best time for planetary observation is during morning or evening twilight, this observation done during the evening. The background sky of this sketch is not the usual dark black that I use in my other planetary sketches, as this observation was done while the sky was still bright.

Thanks for looking,
Ed D

Michael, the rounding of the cusps and the soft terminator are actually good catches for Venus, IME. It's too bright for me (usually after sundown) and too often hidden behind the afternoon cloud build up and the neighbor's two story apartment. The thin crescent must have been a wonderful sight. I'm happy for you, nice observation and accompanying sketch.

Ed,
Great sketch. I did catch Venus the other night in between clouds with my 10 X 30 binoculars and saw a nice crescent. Thanks for sharing.

Ken

Thank you everyone for all the kind words. This sketch was actually not as simple to do as first appears. Details included the fuzzy appearance of the terminator, the shadowing of the cusps and horns, and shadowing of the dark planetary disk. It actually took several tries to get it right. I had forgotten one very important observing note in my sketch that I added, which is having observed 'The Ashen Light'. This is the appearance similar to our moon when observed as a very young or old crescent and the dark portion is feebly visible. (Sky Watcher's Handbook, James Muirden, pg 66)

So Ed with your confirmation this is not now a "Christmas card" but a document because you catched the AL.
Good report, put it in my files here.
Good skies and merry Christmas to you and to all.
