Hurray! The first drawing of the new year! Here's my impression of the Crystal Ball...

Is "beautiful" sufficient? You make easy work, well apparently anyway, of the dark and bright features in nebula.

Peter,

Nice work on an object none to easy. I haven't looked at that one in years but I recall even with a line filter I was still wanting of substantiation. You got that of course and some nice details within. Very nice work
Peter and as always, nicely refined.

Pete

Thank you, Norme and Pete! The seeing was fabulous last night and all the humidity was frozen to the ground. So I didn't have to push the mags in order to see quite a lot of detail. The problem with this particular nebula is that the central star is so bright that it overpowers the subtle details and usually you have to use very high mags in order to see anything. An OIII filter might help but then you're again limited in the magnification. So it's tricky like you suggest, but last night it just leapt out at me!

Peter

Wow, never heard of the Crystal Ball. Hershel needs to start interjecting my observation list. Amazing sketch, Peter!

Many thanks, guys!

@Jason: according to Wikipedia it was actually the Crystal Ball which convinced Herschel that nebulas didn't consist of (unresolvable) stars but that they were of a gaseous nature!

Thanks, Peter. I'm chuckling because I discovered that in the exact article just after looking at you photo last night. I was intrigued by your choice of subject, and now I'm thinking of starting a Herschel 400 list for myself.
