Group Chief project
      #6285327 - 01/01/14 11:27 AM Attachment (37 downloads)

When Mike Jones and Dave Oswald helped Jack with his 10 inch unobstructed Chief much great work was done and ended up with a telescope that had one box that held all the secondary optics in there correct spot .So that only a laser is need to have a perfect setup .I have a CNC file to build this box and have proven that is approach works with the 17 . So any one wont to have a group build .I make no money My cost for the parts are what they are . To build this you need a 10 inch primary a 4inch flat and two off the shelf lens . The top box should cost much more than 100 total /The chief is better I know that . I hope Mike and ED join in There boxes are on me . I am giving my work on this as did Mike and Dave O// There is a huge file on exactly this whole telescope . If Mike or ED helps we could do other sizes and speeds . A pic of the box I was talking about .. If you think this dumb please say why you think it is not better . My sharing my hobby . Are we going to talk or Do something ?? Cool new and better . With some risk

Very cool idea. What is the focal length of the primary? Does it need to to be hyperbolic?

I'm also working on a 10 inch F/10 Chief for a friend. He had bought the optics and wanted me to build the scope. I'm getting about done with the wood work but waiting for the primary. The primary from a top notch supplier had a central bump which would have been OK for a Newt but not for a Chief. I need to paint the interior black but the primary is holding me up. I have jpeg and DFX drawing of the OTA if anyone is interested.

Danny just buy the lens Or you could do one side on a finished optical window like Ed did on the 20 .

To make it the best to have each telescopes final spec run and a tweaked box for each . Not hard it I have the numbers in a way I can give to my CNC Just one file need tweaked the side of the box . Eds way is there as a backup If I fail / And the mirror is fine as a newt / Risk of lens and box // Off the shelf lens should not be much and could be resold . So not big money to try . That is if I can have the numbers . In a way Dave can convert lot of math . Over my head . I can prove my way works and can prove Eds does also /

I think this is a great idea.

The prospect of designing and building one of these from scratch is too daunting to me to undertake in any foreseeable future, especially since I don't make mirrors or lenses, but if it could be reduced to what is in effect a "kit" then the it becomes quite doable.

I think 10" is a good aperture for what I think of as a "planetary scope", big but not too big. A 17" would be an entirely different beast, and still daunting even in kit form, and far more $$.

I would have to have a mirror supplier who would make one to the correct spec. How sensitive is the design to the focal length, given the variability in FL that mirrors are prone to have? Probably for this project I would want to get a Zambuto-made mirror to get the best possible performance.

Carl would be the guy . I think any mirror can work down to maybe f5 / any size too . Off the shelf is limited to maybe f8 not sure ?

Did this metal box design ever get finished and tested?
