Lambda Orionis new
      #6285180 - 01/01/14 10:21 AM Attachment (18 downloads)

This is a Sketch from last Friday night of Lambda Orionis and the asterism (Lambda Orionis Cluster or Collinder 69) where it is located (Orion's Head). I recently acquired a used Borg 60ED which I am trying out as both a finder for the C8 and a wide field view. Here I used an 11mm Nagler with the 60Ed giving a 32X/2.4deg field of view. With a 3.5mm Nagler at 100X/0.8 deg Lambda Orionis was resolved with the major star a very nice disc with one concentric ring which overlapped at the edge of the companion. I should have tried sketching that as well. I need to work on my magnitudes-in the 2.4 deg view Lambda, Phi 1 and Phi 2;1 should stand out a bit more from the rest as well as the three stars in a slight arc between Lambda and Phi 1.

Not a difficult split except it was fairly cool and the atmosphere was not so stable at first (or my C8 had not stabilized). But eventually had a fairly good view.

There is a pretty good description of Lamda Orionis in Wiki-pedia.

Nice wide field sketch. You have to love those little refractors.

Very nicely done, Pete! The comparison is very interesting.

Still a great observation, Pete! Even if you feel the split wasn't very challenging. I love the related sketches at varying magnifications.

Jason, That's what I've been aiming at for a visual setup-A finder that can also be a good wide field visual tool as well when sketching. I really like this set-up of the C8 with a 60-70mm light telescope.
