First Light - Saturn 2014rgb - & iR742+Polar map
      #6300795 - 01/08/14 08:14 PM Attachment (122 downloads)

Hi folks! - this morning we shot a couple of captures of Saturn in the morning sky..... but at the elevation, 0.6 mag & over 4 months till opposition it was probably a bit adventurous without very good seeing - which this most definitely wasn't!

But the "Hex" can be seen in these images if somewhat indistinctly.....with a ring tilt of 22░ atm some nice seeing even now should give anyone (esp. in the Sthn Hemisphere) a good crack at getting it well defined.

In a similar vein the Sth Polar Zone is all but invisible as the rings almost completely blot that region out from view!

Still, it was good practise as we hadn't imaged for a month or more now...and this image is only 18 days short of a year to the day when another image we captured demonstrated that the NPZ hexagon could be imaged with amateur scopes: http://www.cloudynights.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Board/Imaging/Numbe... ..."old hat" now but very exciting at the time as that thread showed!

Re that image from 2013 (not our best by a long way but perhaps our most "satisfying" ) Mike Foulkes (BAA Saturn Director) had me rush-process it just after Xmas for the 2014 European Astrofest poster...hopefully we'll get a memento if it proves useable!

Here's this morning's effort - a very rushed "in the field" processing job and I'm sure folks will see a few furphies that I've been too tired to pick up.....and it's off to sleep for both of us now (well, Pat's been snoozing for a few hours already! )

Perhaps tomorrow morning will have some better seeing..?!?

Edit: just added an iR742nM image plus a Polar projection map thereof...

Definitely excellent for first Saturn. Are you using basically the same settings as last year?

Thanks Paul (both Pauls) Frank, John, Rob, Steve, Mitchell, Sam, Andrew, JP & Vasco.....this is a very rudimentary image but I'm still glad we tried imaging "The Ringed One" this morning.

Paul, 75fps R&G with an 80%+ gain and 60fps blue with 95% gain - this is with histo values of 45%-50%.....Saturn is around 0.6 magnitude at present and in the morning murk there was no chance of ramping those up to some of the frame-rates we could employ last year!

A pity 'cos the conditions meant high fps might've proved usefull - they were such that focusing was a bit like chasing shadows tbh.....you think you're getting nearer focus as the seeing improves to provide a sharper image but in reality you're moving away from focus because the seeing is shifting so rapidly & erratically - when you go backwards it is the same problem...these circumstances can be very frustrating!

After the 2nd rgb set the seeing went to muck although we did shoot an iR742nM capture that managed to garner enough frames for an interesting image...I've made a Polar Projection of this capture also to elicit as much as could be discerned of/in the NPZ "hex" although this is very problematical despite being pretty mild with processing application...hopefully tomorrow morning might provide something more!

The iR742nM image

Darryl,

Great opening shot! I very much look forward to your images. It will be a fun season coming up with both Saturn and Mars.

George
