Rings of Saturn through the years new
      #6303954 - 01/10/14 10:57 AM

Improved version now that I have a good 2014 image.

I'm not crazy about including 2010 but I will show both versions :

Back in 2010 I could barely polar align well enough to planetary image and was working with a C8 and the original junky celestron neximage. While I got some decent moon and Jupiter images with it, for anything dimmer it wasn't much good of course frame rate and processing with much worse then too. Too bad I don't have those video files anymore, I'm sure more could be squeezed out with modern technology. At the time I was using a netbook with maybe a 20 or 40 gig SSD which basically required EVERYTHING being deleted before beginning a planetary imaging run.

2011 is with the dmk 21 - I had not yet purchased a filter wheel and then I had my hand controller die and it took quite a long time for celestron to send me a replacement so I never got a colour image.

2012 is also with the dmk but with lrgb filters.

2013 and 2014 is with the asi120mm with ir rgb filters.

I can't wait to look at this again in 10 years with 10 more images.

Andrew, excellent ring history! I would just desaturate the 2010 and keep it. The hex is already visible on your 2014 shot. Thanks for posting it

Regards,
Steve

Well I'm not crazy about 2010 either but it is needed just the same. Sometimes even the bad stuff is needed to tell the whole story. Mike

A good graphic example of the changing ring tilt Andrew!

You could always make a mono (b&w) version of the images like this if the first one's colour annoyed you too much..!!!

I like having the 2010 shot in there - the edge-on rings really help show the evolution of the tilt and it also demonstrates how your AP skills have progressed...
