replace Nag 12T2 with Delos?
      #6320477 - 01/18/14 01:07 PM

OK, enough of the T6 idea. Now I'm thinking of replacing my 12T2 with a Delos .. 12mm or 14mm. My 8mm Delos has a wonderful FOV. It seems closer to a Nagler than 72 degrees.

12 or 14mm Delos?

Rob

Why not the 12 T4?

Delos will have better transmission
Delos will have better Eye relief

The T2 will have better eyeplacement
The T2 much wider FOV

Tough call
Also the 12T4 is nice

your scope is f/7?

mine is and with a 8mm ep i would prefer a 12 using a scope with a 700 mm focal length

both delos perform similarly. and compared to the T 6, they are more neutral tone which i prefer to look at star clusters

I just tried a T4 recently (a friends ep). The views were nice but I found eye placement too fussy for me. Too sensitive to position my eye for eye blackouts.
Maybe I'll just stick with the 12T2.

Good idea Rob. I saw you had it in Shop and Swap a while back and thought about getting it, it's a nice eyepiece

I like classic glass. I'd get the Nag 20T2 as well but it's so big and heavy!

While most of the old Tele Vue's have their charm, the Delos largely obsoletes them all. Probably worth making the change, especially from an old war horse like a T2 Nagler.

The 14D takes a lot of in-focus, FYI. I've not measured it, but it was a bit more than my 31 Nagler. Not a worry in SCT's and most refractors, could require some small mods in a Newtonian.

You already have the 8D so using magnification multiples, 1.6 x 8 = 12.8 which slightly favors the 12D. Depending upon your scope focal length and local seeing, the 12D may get you closer to your "average" night limit than the 14D.

Either barlows well, a possible consideration based on whatever barlow you may own.

If your primary scope is f/7, the resulting exit pupil with the 14D is 2 mm, which is about optimum for sharpness wit respect to the human eye.

I guess it depends upon what you already have in the upper-teens to low 20's as to which fits best.

Probably not a bad choice either way.

I had to get an eyepiece adaptor to drop the eyepiece down a half inch. That really is an easy fix.

I'm not sure whether a 12 or 14 Delos would best suit you. When I owned both, I used my 12 far more on a 12.5 inch, F5 telescope. I sold both and bought a 13 Ethos--the Ethos knocked it out of the park.

12mm Delos all the way! The eye relief is super cozy, and the Delos eyepieces are like Naglers on steroids. The field feels like a Nagler with the added bonus of the eye relief. I tried a friends 12mm Delos and really liked it a lot.

If money was not a factor, I would own the 4.5mm, 6mm, 10mm, & 14mm Delos eyepieces.

I had the 12T2 & 20T2 great eyepieces the 20t2 is a breeze to look through and I echo your comment that the 12T2 is much less fuzzy to look through than the 12T4 but when it comes to sharpness and transmission/coatings the T4 wins no contest. I would expect the new Delos or any of the newer Nags to do the same.

Update … after searching for a used 12mm Delos, I just ordered a new one. I plan to A/B it against my Nag12T2 and sell off one of them. Stay tuned.

Well done Rob. You are going to like your new eyepiece. I look forward to reading your comments and comparison. But I know which one you are going to sell.

Glad you picked up a Delos Rob. They have been given some excellent reviews and if money were not such a limiting factor I would most likely own one. I've got a feeling on which is gonna win. Might be interested in the 12T2 if your gonna end up selling.

I have mixed feelings about the 12T2. I've always loved the views through the T2 Naglers I've owned. Very user friendly but, could perhaps use a bit more eye relief. If I had the funds I'd own the whole lineup if T1 and T2 Naglers.

The 12mm Type 4 Nagler was the one to own..hands down a GREAT eyepiece with excellent contrast and eye relief as it was a natural upgrade to the original Type 2.

The 12mm Delos will have a smaller field as I'm sure you know, but it also has far greater eye relief AND..a far more modern image. You'll see HUGE improvements in brightness (light throughput) contrast, field correction and lastly and most importantly to me, color neutrality. Stars appear whiter, rendering a more realistic, natural view. Planetary and star colors will be more obvious. All in all a superior view in all respects compared to the T2 Nagler or just about any eyepiece. It's a KILLER planetary eyepiece, with a good quality barlow it dominates the planetary viewing experience!
