Looks like Orion is finally coming with the EQ8
      #6324017 - 01/20/14 12:13 PM

Hi,

It looks like Orion is updating their website for an imminent launch of the EQ8 aka HDX110.

The specs of the HDX110 is 6 arcsec peek to peek of PE. Very interesting.

No price yet...

Cheers,

Jose

The Binostore has the Skywatcher EQ8 up for around $4500...so I expect Orion will price it pretty close.

Looks like Celestron and Meade have a new kid on the block to contend with. How's the reviews been from Europe? The little I've read, there's been a few hiccups to overcome.

It looks like they've made it so there aren't too many cable snag points. That's the one thing I really didn't like about the CGE Pro...to many things sticking out to grab cables.

David

The mount is made by Celestron's parent corporation, Synta, which owns both SkyWatcher and Celestron.

An end to the CGE Pro, Rod? Since I have more time with the membership now, I need to do some catching up. Regardless of who makes the mount, its outward appearance looks pretty well thought out. The altitude adjustment is a major improvement over the Atlas. The azimuth adjusters look fairly pedestrian, but if the action is smooth and the take up on the adjusters is fine enough, it should make polar aligning fairly easy.

There is a long thread on IceInSpace on the EQ8; since the HDX110 is its twin brother it is probably all relevant.

I've heard of a few owners reporting the EQ8 DEC axis seizing; including on the EQ8 Yahoo Group a few weeks back and in the link above.

Now I'm not sure if these seized axis are from early adopters who got their mount from the initial batch produced. It could be that this issue is resolved now, I have no way of knowing that.

I almost bought one (the EQ8) back in November/December but opted for another mount/brand. The reported DEC axis seized had no baring on my decision though.

The DEC axis seizing aside on 2 reported case as far as I know, the EQ8 seems to be loved by their owners, the HDX110 should get the same love from future owners I would presume.

Who knows? But, 'twere it me, I wouldn't want to have to produce two entirely different mounts with similar specs...

Apparently, the problems that have popped up in Europe is that the big worm thingy is not perfectly centered on the axis. They have worm slack at one end and worm too tight 180° away from that. No way to adjust it properly...

We'll see if it is an isolated incidence. I know of at least one good friend who returned it immediately and got himself another mount instead.

Hi Jose,

The link you posted is no longer working, but I was able to find Orion's mount with pier tripod page HERE.

Orion must be getting close to offer it for sale. If you click on the "Videos" tab next to the "Images" tab near the top of the page at the above link, you'll find a six minute video about the mount. They also have web pages set up for selling the mount by itself, without the pier tripod and also for extra weights and the polar alignment scope.

That isn't a worm issue- the gear itelf isn't concentric with its axis. I have a DEC gear on my CGEM which is like this- if you take up the backlash on the loose side, it binds on the tight side. Some backlash must survive for the mount to work. Same factory, so I am not surprised. Ed Byers they are not.

Hi Gary,

Indeed the link is broken, you can still watch the video in the link you pasted.

One member of my local astro group called Orion about the pricing and the answer was:

$3800 EQ head
$5000 EQ head + pier and accessories

We don't know exactly what is included for each price.

Cheers,

Jose

If they want 5000 for it, they are high. Way high.

I'd personally spend 5000 for a CGE if you wanted a top grade mount. True? then you'd save 1000

HDX110 plus accessories
and
HDX110 head

I wonder why they didn't use spring loaded worms. That would at least solve the issue you described.

6 a/s Pk-Pk PE before PPEC? 110lb capacity? EQMOD compatible?

Good option to consider.

Personally if I was in the market for a big heavy mount again I would have to force myself to wait a couple of years. Would give me some time to start saving though.

Here is something interesting: when you look at the "In the Box" tab for the full up mount and tripod you get two of the big counterweights, but NOT if you buy just the GEM head. Weights will set you back $115 each...personally I think this is a bogus way to do business

Clear Skies,
Brian
