Vixen Eyepieces at EyepiecesEtc.com! new
      #6326952 - 01/21/14 08:16 PM

We are now in stock of Vixen's high-end eyepieces, the LVW Widefield (the one often copied but not equaled), and the new high-definition SLV eyepieces.

Vixen is the #1 brand in Japan among fussy connaisseurs.

Is there something you can tell us about the SLV's Don? I've not seen them mentioned.
I have two Vixen NLV's and have been very disappointed by the coating quality: very high reflectivity. Do the SLV share this "feature"?

Here is what I know:
Vixens NEW SLV Eyepieces feature fully multi-coated lenses in a full metal body. High quality lanthanum glass, with a scratch resistant lens surface, delivers an exceptionally clear field of view. With eye relief of 20mm, the twist up eye cup and high eye point design ensures many hours of observation without eye strain. The unique shape is easy to grip and will not roll (Don's comment: don't trust that--it depends on the surface and the slant]
Specifications:
All Metal Body
Polygonal rubber grip for anti rolling
Aluminum Eyepiece Barrel
Size: 31.7mm (1.25")
Apparent FOV: 50
Eye Relief: 20mm
7 Elements/4 Groups (2.5mm-8el, 20mm-6el,25mm-5el)
Weight: @5 oz (approx)
I looked through a 25mm and 20mm at the Moon this morning and did not see much in the way of internal reflections. If it was bad, I would have noticed it right away.
Field stop was sharp and in focus.
Rectilinear distortion was small, as would be expected from 50 degrees.
General sharpness was good to excellent (I need a longer test to tell--stars were very sharp).
Astigmatism--very low, if any.
Chromatic aberration--just about none, even lateral, as you'd expect.

The SLV replaces the NLV, and is supposed to be a re-vamped and improved version of same. The NLV comes in a 40mm and 50mm(2") not available in the SLV, but that's going to be such a low power in most scopes that any differences would be moot.
A close examination of the coatings shows these Chinese-made Vixen eyepieces have coatings very reminiscent of the Astrotech Paradigms--reflections off the lenses look about the same. They are fully multi-coated, with a slightly wider field of view at higher powers.
I'll have to see if it's clear enough tonight to try high powers on Jupiter. That should be a good test of internal reflections.

Thanks, I have some Paradigms so I know what to expect.
My main problems with the NLV coatings was during daytime when too much light reflected off the eye lens.

Don,

Did you state correct that the Vixen SLV eyepieces are made in China? Were the NLV eyepieces made in China as well? I somehow thought that these were made in Japan.

Thanks.

Greg,
I think you're right. NLV=Japan, SLV=China.
Of course, I'm not sure that means anything.
ES=China
Baader=China
and many of Vixen's scopes have been made in China for years.
What matters is QC, and that's an open-ended question.

Has anyone had a chance to use the SLV eyepieces against Jupiter or double stars yet? Im interested in the shorter focal length ones.

I had a bunch of eyepieces to test last night, but clouds came in right at sunset, so I got skunked.
Jupiter, recently, is a test object, so I can do this. Is a 5mm short enough?

Yes Don, that would be great. I'm interested in the 6mm.

Don't,do you happen to know the field stop diameter of the SLVs?
