13"-14" dia. aluminum tubing? new
      #6328268 - 01/22/14 12:29 PM

I have been looking for a supplier of 13" to 14" dia. aluminum tubing. So far I can only find 12". Hastings has 12" but list nothing larger. Does anybody know were I could get a tube 13" or 14"dia. aluminum tube 60" - 72" long with wall thickness no more than .1" but preferred .065"?
Thanks for any help. Dane

You may have to have it rolled and welded. Last year I bought a ten-foot-long aluminum tube, 14" OD, .065" wall, from a friend who had it made then abandoned the project. It came out very well, the welds were done on the inside of the tube, the outside seams ground and worked until it was effectively as smooth as a seamless tube. It will be more expensive than irrigation pipe, which is what Hastings sells for telescope tubes.

I had a couple tubes rolled. Riveted both, lapped the seam on one and used a backing strip on the other. 0.065 is pretty thin for such a large tube. Have it rolled out of 6061 if possible. Mine was 0.083 6061 as I recall Much better stuff then standard soft sheet and it's such a large tube it will bend very nicely.

I think Parallax will roll custom tubes, as well. Give Joe a call.

Thanks gentleman, it didn't even occur to me to have one rolled and either welded or riveted. I will definitely pursue these options.

Be careful of the dimensional accuracy however. I have a 12" rolled Al tube; the mirror mount forces the tube to be round m/l at the mirror end but the eye-piece end measures about 12" one direction and 11 3/4 at right angles (where the seam is). This makes it hard to centre the diagonal properly. The tube was made about 40 years ago however so maybe things are more accurate now.
